As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of NFL gaming under my belt, I must say I find myself utterly baffled by De’Vondre Campbell‘s decision to quit during Thursday’s 49ers-Rams game. Having spent countless hours on Madden, I’ve learned that the team always comes first.
Many are surprised by why De’Vondre Campbell decided to withdraw during the 49ers-Rams game on Thursday. When the linebacker was asked to step in for an injured Dre Greenlaw in the third quarter, he declined to participate and left the field, even though he was fully dressed in uniform. After the 49ers’ defeat, several teammates, such as tight end George Kittle and cornerback Charvarius Ward, expressed their displeasure over Campbell’s choice. However, former linebacker Bart Scott has since provided his opinion on ESPN regarding why Campbell opted not to play.
Why didn’t De’Vondre Campbell play?
It was reported by Scott on ESPN’s Get Up that De’Vondre Campbell may have chosen not to play because he felt offended or taken aback by the team, and also due to a strong sense of personal dignity.
To clarify, Scott suggests that Campbell was a temporary solution brought in by the 49ers to fill the void left by Greenlaw, who was out for most of the 2023 season due to a severe Achilles injury sustained during Super Bowl LVIII. In the 2024 season, Campbell started as the linebacker in 12 out of 13 games, but was benched when Greenlaw returned to play on Thursday. When Greenlaw had to exit the game due to knee discomfort, he was once more overlooked for Dee Winters.
As a football enthusiast, I can empathize with Campbell’s feelings when he says the team preferring Greenlaw and Winters over him must have been disheartening for a player who takes pride in his starter status and has demonstrated high-level play. It’s like being treated as a stepchild or a temporary rental car, which isn’t an ideal situation for any professional athlete. Although I wouldn’t have made the same choice, it’s evident that pride can sometimes cloud our judgment, leading to decisions that may not align with common sense, a lesson many players have learned throughout their careers.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: According to NFL analyst Ryan Clark, Campbell should have suited up to prove his worth, given that they selected him initially. He argues that if he had concerns about sitting out, there were plenty of chances during the week leading up to the game for him to express his unwillingness to play.
In a parallel development to Diontae Johnson’s case, who declined to participate in the Ravens-Eagles game in mid-December, there are similarities emerging with Campbell’s situation. However, unlike Johnson, who was penalized by the Ravens for behavior harmful to the team, it remains undetermined whether the 49ers will take a similar action against Campbell.
The 49ers’ loss to the Ravens makes it unlikely that the team will enter the playoffs.
