As a gamer with a decade-long history of juggling multiple subscriptions, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when yet another service I use raises its prices. YouTube TV has been a reliable companion for me, offering a flexible streaming solution to cut the cord from traditional cable. However, looking back at the price hikes over the years, it seems like the service is slowly inching towards the realm of traditional cable prices, which was exactly what we were trying to avoid!
The impending increase in the YouTube TV subscription fee, moving from $73 to $83 per month, has left customers questioning the initial cost of the service. On December 12, 2024, YouTube notified its subscribers about this latest price rise, scheduled for January 13, 2025. The appeal of the service as a means to break free from traditional cable contracts has weakened since it was first introduced in 2017. Here’s a breakdown of how much YouTube TV subscription fees have climbed over the years:
What is the YouTube TV price history?
In 2017, YouTube TV cost $35 monthly. If its price increases to $83 per month starting in 2025, this represents an over 230% rise compared to the initial cost.
Here’s a breakdown of how YouTube TV has steadily increased its price over the last eight years:
- 2017: $35 per month
- 2018: $40 per month
- 2019: $50 per month
- 2020: $65 per month
- 2023: $73 per month
- 2025: $83 per month
In a recent email, Google explained that the increase in pricing for 2025 is due to escalating costs associated with content and the continuous investment in enhancing the quality of their services. He emphasized that they did not arrive at these decisions without careful consideration.
It’s challenging to directly compare the $83 monthly fee to that of conventional cable plans, as many customers acquire cable service as part of a bundle that also includes phone and internet services. According to U.S News & World Report, the price range for TV-only services in 2022 was between $20 and $149.99 per month, with an average cost of approximately $78.58 monthly.
To clarify, the standard Hulu + Live TV bundle is priced at around $82.99 a month. This plan includes Disney+ and ESPN+ as additional features.
2023 rolled around, and YouTube TV upped their prices. The National Advertising Review Board (NARB) suggested that Google should stop using the claim that their service was “$600 cheaper than cable” in a couple of ads. According to Ars Technica, Google tried to contest this ruling, but eventually agreed to change or discontinue that specific advertising claim.
