As a gamer with a rich history of immersion into various genres and universes, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of “Hellboy: The Crooked Man.” Being a long-time fan of the Hellboy franchise, I appreciate the director’s commitment to staying true to the source material, especially since it’s set in the 1950s and promises a more procedural approach to our beloved half-demon hero.
In contrast to earlier adaptations of the Hellboy series, the upcoming film titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” as per director and co-writer Brian Taylor, promises a significantly fresh take on the storyline.
Written by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is the fourth installment of the acclaimed superhero horror series, produced in live-action format. Previous portrayals of Hellboy have been numerous, with Ron Perlman and David Harbour having previously donned the role of the half-demon character. During San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Taylor disclosed that this movie would distinguish itself from its predecessors.
The director shared with Collider that this movie is unlike any other, as they didn’t draw inspiration from previous films. Instead, their reference point was solely the original Mike Mignola comic book. Their aim was to authentically bring The Crooked Man to life, which resulted in a period piece, featuring a younger Hellboy, and no connection to the other movies on screen.
He went on to say, “It’s a style of folk horror, similar to a procedural, that resembles the beloved Hellboy. Imagine him as a roaming night watchman who just happens to show up in your town with a haunting or dark force issues. He solves these problems, and oh yes, he’s also a plumber! That’s the kind of Hellboy we appreciate. My goal was to create for an audience of one: if Mike Mignola feels this is his Hellboy, then I feel we have achieved success.”
Who stars in Hellboy: The Crooked Man?
In the new version of Hellboy (also known as Anung Un Rama), Jack Kesy steps into the role. Alongside him are Adeline Rudolph portraying Bobbie Jo Song, Jefferson White playing Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara acting as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell assuming Reverend Nathaniel Armstrong Watts, Hannah Margetson bringing Cora Fisher to life, and Martin Bassindale taking on the character of Jeremiah Witkins.
According to the official summary, the upcoming movie tells a spine-tingling story about enduring against evil forces. In the 1950s, new BPRD agent Bobbie Jo Song gets caught up in a perilous predicament when she’s given the mission of transporting a spider to the Paranormal Research and Defense Bureau. To tackle the sinister Crooked Man, who has come back to Earth to collect souls for the devil, she needs Hellboy’s aid.
A specific launch date for Hellboy: The Crooked Man hasn’t been announced just yet, but we anticipate seeing it in the cinemas towards the end of this year.
