In a recent conversation, the filmmaker behind “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” Brian Taylor, shared insights into the impending R-rated remake’s horror elements. He disclosed that renowned author Stephen King served as one of his creative influences for this film.

In a recent conversation, Taylor made it clear that the upcoming film “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” will be a true horror experience, departing significantly from the atmosphere of past adaptations such as Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films and David Harbour’s reboot, which emphasized more on the magical and fantastical elements of the character.

Taylor stated (via GamesRadar+), “It’s a terrifying tale, it’s a chilling movie – it couldn’t be more straightforward,” he explained. “I approached this as an adaptation, similar to how I would adapt a Stephen King story. The source material is rich with detail; I’m simply bringing it to life with as much dedication and passion as possible. Fans of the original comic book should be thrilled. In fact, there are already online comments from people who have seen teasers, saying, ‘This looks just like the comic.’ That’s exactly what we aim for.”

He stated, “We weren’t aiming to resemble other films at all; they stand on their own. They are excellent productions, but this isn’t a space opera. Instead, it’s a tale rooted in folklore. It’s self-contained. I believe we aimed to make things more straightforward. I have the sense that movies these days have become overly complex. We’re referring to current films, it seems like they span two or three hours, an hour of which is spent explaining events and I still don’t grasp it.”

In “The Crooked Man,” which is helmed by Brian Taylor (known for “Crank”), the screenplay has been penned by Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy comics, along with Chris Golden. This updated version features Jack Kesy, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson, and Martin Bassindale in key roles. Notably, Kesy takes on the role of the revamped titular character, a part previously played by Ron Perlman in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation and David Harbour in the 2019 version.
