Heather Benjamin’s ‘New Strangeness Bloom’ Rewrites Myths of Womanhood

Heather Benjamin’s “New Strangeness Bloom,” currently being displayed at Olympia in NYC, delves into the intricacies of femininity using vivid, symbol-rich paintings that are surreal in nature. Influenced by her past in zine creation, Benjamin combines elements of mythology, personal recollections, and introspection to create dreamlike depictions of desolate deserts.

In a unique blend of deity-like and wandering characters, Benjamin’s figures traverse stark landscapes teeming with unusual flora that flourish beneath electric skies. These blossoms, holding both literal and symbolic meanings, embody the strength to endure in challenging conditions. Drawing inspiration from Surrealism and art created outside mainstream norms, Benjamin’s work merges the rough and the fantastical: lovers floating aimlessly, enigmatic messages etched on cowboy hats, and butterflies bursting forth from broken mirrors.

Drawing inspiration from Diane di Prima’s Loba, this display explores femininity in a twisted perspective reminiscent of American culture. Sharp talons, squashed insects, and fluid realities question conventional narratives about womanhood. The exhibition can be seen until March 29th.
