This week saw the reveal of the 77th Primetime Emmy nominations, and now HBO holds the distinction of having the two most-nominated comic book shows ever. Yet, HBO isn’t content with their achievements as Casey Bloys, head of HBO, expressed confidence that the upcoming DC Universe series Lanterns will also vie for Emmy recognition.
Since the turn of the 21st century, a multitude of comic book series have been adapted into television shows. However, only a select few have garnered recognition through awards. Specifically, DC’s Watchmen, Marvel’s WandaVision, and Amazon’s The Boys are the exceptions, each earning over 20 nominations in their respective award years.
As a gamer, I’d say, “Reflecting on HBO and HBO Max raking in an astounding 142 Emmy nominations for their 20 unique originals this year, I can’t help but get excited about the future. One of the gems in our upcoming lineup is a fresh superhero series called Lanterns.
Lanterns wouldn’t be DC’s first Emmy hit
If there’s a piece of wood available, I plan to tap on it since I have superstitious beliefs. Let me put it simply, I feel optimistic about it. As for the Emmy nominations, I can’t predict exactly when it will be announced, but regardless of the window it falls into, I truly believe it has a chance to be a contender.” (Bloys stated)
It’s not unreasonable for Bloys to consider Lanterns as an Emmy contender, considering the impressive roster of talent involved in the DCU series. For instance, Kyle Chandler, one of the co-leads playing Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, has been nominated four times for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and even won once for Friday Night Lights. Additionally, Damon Lindelof, who was behind the acclaimed series Watchmen, is also associated with Lanterns as a writer and executive producer.
Compared favorably to the Emmy-winning series True Detective, Lanterns spotlights Hal Jordan, a well-respected member of an elite space police force called the Green Lanterns. In this intriguing tale, he finds himself reluctantly guiding a younger Green Lantern, John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). The two interstellar enforcers are unwillingly pulled into a sinister Earth-bound mystery when they investigate a murder that has occurred in the heartland of America.
The captivating series “Lanterns” is set to debut on HBO in the early months of 2026, marking its entry as part of the DC Universe’s initial chapter titled “Gods and Monsters.
