HBO Max Says ‘Twitter Won’t Let’ It Change Names

It appears that HBO Max encountered an unforeseen hurdle while changing its name on X (previously known as Twitter). This week, the streaming service reverted back to using the HBO Max branding, after earlier adopting just “Max.” However, there seems to be an issue with their official X account, as it continues to show the old “Max” moniker.

What happened to HBO Max?

Starting this Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery has resumed using the HBO Max name, instead of the abbreviated Max branding that was introduced in 2023. However, the change seems to be causing issues on platform X (previously known as Twitter), while it has been smoothly implemented on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.

On platform X, the primary StreamOnMax account continues to display the Max branding, and a prominent tweet acknowledges the ongoing issue: “Twitter won’t allow me to revert my name back.” Simultaneously, the older hbomax account includes a bio stating, “Twitter won’t let us alter our usernames ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”. At present, X is the only significant social media platform that hasn’t transitioned, and there has been no update from their communication team.

The announcement for the name change was made during Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation in May. Initially launched as HBO Max in 2020, the streaming service was rebranded as Max in 2023 to encompass a wider variety of content. However, after receiving mixed feedback, the company decided to reinstate the HBO branding in July 2025.

During the May unveiling, HBO CEO Casey Bloys playfully commented on the change. He remarked, “I understand you’re all taken aback, but the positive side is I still have plenty of writing materials left over from the last time.” In a communique, the organization explained that this transformation was driven by shifting consumer preferences, and that while no consumer today is asking for more content, many are expressing a desire for higher quality content instead.

Additionally, the company is introducing HBO Max in twelve new global regions this month, along with adopting a new name.
