The Handmaid’s Tale Season 7 is not happening.

It’s been verified that the upcoming Season 6 will be the last installment of this series. The creators opted to bring the story to a close on their own terms, instead of risking cancellation. Initially, creator Bruce Miller envisioned a five-season narrative, but later decided to extend it to six.

According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Yahlin Chang shared that prior to the start of season five, they had a small gathering and Bruce said, “I believe we have two more seasons left.” The sixth season delves further into the uprising against Gilead, concluding June Osborne’s narrative after a long odyssey from handmaid to rebellion leader.

Instead of creating a seventh season, Hulu chose to create a sequel series named “The Testaments.” This spin-off is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel and is set approximately 15 years after the events depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Bruce Miller stepped down from his role on The Handmaid’s Tale in 2023 to focus solely on The Testaments, which began filming in April 2025.

In the upcoming series, we’ll see familiar faces like Ann Dowd reprising her role as Aunt Lydia, along with new additions such as Chase Infiniti as Agnes, Lucy Halliday as Daisy, and Mattea Conforti as Becka. The narrative will explore a younger group of women in Gilead who are struggling to understand their circumstances and yearn for liberation.

As Hulu explains, “The Testaments” is a tale of growing up that unfolds within the setting of Gilead, and it promises to offer a unique atmosphere and ambiance while maintaining crucial themes. Actress Elisabeth Moss, who played June, will also play a role behind the scenes as an executive producer.

A release window has not been confirmed, but a 2026 premiere is likely.
