As a devoted admirer of Saoirse Ronan‘s exceptional acting prowess, I must admit that her reminiscing about losing the Luna Lovegood role in Harry Potter resonates deeply with me. Her story is a poignant reminder that even the greatest talents can face setbacks, but it’s how one rises above them that truly defines success.
Despite playing numerous captivating roles during her acting journey, Saoirse Ronan still finds herself reflecting on missing out on the Luna Lovegood part in the Harry Potter series, an experience that has lingered deeply for quite some time.
Despite being recognized as one of her generation’s most accomplished actors, boasting a remarkable repertoire of captivating roles, Ronan was not cast as Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter more than a decade back.
Eventually, Evanna Lynch took on the role of the unconventional Ravenclaw character in four Harry Potter films: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix released in 2007, The Half-Blood Prince in 2009, Deathly Hallows – Part 1 in 2010, and Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
What did Saoirse Ronan say about losing the Luna Lovegood role in Harry Potter?
She told Jimmy Kimmel, ‘There are moments I’ve acted on, only to realize later, ‘Oh dear, that was a mistake,’ but one that has lingered over time for me… I didn’t refuse the opportunity, I simply didn’t get the role.’
She explained, “I tried out for Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter years ago since it seemed similar to an Irish character. Consequently, they invited nearly half of Ireland to audition too. Although I knew I didn’t stand a chance because I was too young, it was amazing to read a scene that would be included in Harry Potter, which was the most exciting thing.

Although Ronan didn’t secure the Luna Lovegood role, her acting career took flight at just 12 years old with her portrayal of Briony Tallis in the romantic war drama Atonement. Following this 2007 film, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Ronan continued to shine in numerous critically-acclaimed movies such as The Lovely Bones, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lady Bird, and Little Women.
Besides her role in these films, she has also acted in Hanna, Violet & Daisy, Brooklyn, Mary Queen of Scots, Ammonite, See How They Run, Foe, and The Outrun, along with several other projects as well.
