Harry Potter: John Lithgow Reacts to J.K. Rowling Backlash & Dumbledore Casting

John Lithgow addresses the criticism surrounding his role as Dumbledore in the forthcoming Harry Potter series from HBO, which is being overseen by J.K. Rowling, a figure who has sparked controversy within the franchise.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the Golden Globe-winning star, famous for The Crown and Conclave, is set to embody the cherished Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. However, even with this iconic role under his belt, there’s a wave of comments on his social media platform questioning his participation in the upcoming series.

What did John Lithgow say about his Harry Potter casting backlash?

In an interview with The Sunday Times, John Lithgow expressed surprise at the criticism he faced for taking on the role of Dumbledore. He also mentioned receiving a text from a friend containing a link to an article titled “An Open Letter to John Lithgow: Consider Leaving Harry Potter,” which argued that J.K. Rowling has made numerous anti-trans statements and even targeted transgender children.

Lithgow responded negatively when asked if he had anticipated the criticism. “Indeed, it was a significant choice,” he explained, “because it might be one of my final major roles. It’s an eight-year commitment, and I found myself contemplating mortality as this seemed like a suitable role for winding down.

He went on to say, “I pondered, ‘Why should this matter in any way?’ I’m intrigued as to how J.K. Rowling has dealt with it. At some stage, I’ll likely encounter her and I’m eager to discuss this topic with her.

Afterward, the actor exclaimed, “Absolutely not heaven, not at all,” showing a lack of remorse for being part of the Harry Potter franchise.

Rowling’s comments and beliefs concerning the transgender community have drawn criticism. Many of the initial Harry Potter cast members, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright, Sean Biggerstaff, among others, have openly denounced her remarks in public statements.

Regardless of any negative feedback, the new take on the Harry Potter series has been confirmed to be progressing, as more celebrities join the production.
