Harry Potter HBO Show Production Date Set, Over 30,000 Kids Auditioned

As a hardcore Harry Potter fan who grew up reading J.K. Rowling’s magical tales and spent countless hours at Hogwarts with Hermione and Ron, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation about the upcoming Harry Potter HBO show. The casting search for the next Harry, Hermione, and Ron is like finding the Philosopher’s Stone for me – a quest that’s been long awaited!

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the planned Harry Potter series for HBO is aiming to begin filming.

A day following rumors about Paapa Essiedu being cast as Severus Snape, Warner Bros. disclosed that the show is aiming to initiate production next summer. This is when filming for the series will reportedly commence in Leavesden, England, where Warner Bros. Discovery maintains a studio.

In a presentation at their London headquarters on Thursday (as reported by Variety), Warner Bros. Discovery disclosed that they have begun production and further revealed that they auditioned over 32,000 children for the main roles of their upcoming series. The team in charge of casting, according to WB, has been diligently sifting through approximately 500-1,000 video submissions daily in search of the ideal candidates.

As a dedicated Harry Potter fan, I can confirm that Gardiner and Mylod have reassured us that the upcoming series will adhere to the age guidelines set by J.K. Rowling in her beloved books, keeping true to the magic of the original stories.

What do we know about the Harry Potter HBO show?

The Harry Potter series is often referred to as a “long-term” endeavor, spanning over a decade. Each season is planned to cover one of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books in the series. At present, auditions for the next incarnations of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are ongoing in both the United Kingdom and Ireland. The ideal child actors should be between 9 and 11 years old as of April 2025, hinting at a possible start of production around that time.

As for who else might join the cast, it’s still uncertain at this point, but there have been whispers suggesting possible additions like Dumbledore and Voldemort.

The HBO series, which is being penned by Emmy-winning writer Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession), boasts executive producers such as Gardiner herself, Mark Mylod, J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman, a longtime producer in the Harry Potter franchise. Notably, Mylod, who has previously collaborated with HBO on Game of Thrones and The Last of Us, will direct several episodes as well. This production is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television.
