A significant surge of directed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks brought about the demise of a prominent World of Warcraft Classic guild, OnlyFangs. These attacks also resulted in the loss of several other entities, sparking widespread outrage among the WoW community.
Under the guidance of renowned streamer SodaPopin, these assaults resulted in over half of the hardcore guild being eliminated, as they occurred during massive raids. Since the fallen characters can’t be revived, the only potential solution was a rollback by Blizzard, an event many considered highly improbable.
As a guild leader, I’m not at ease forcing individuals into raiding situations where they need world buffs, flasks, consumables, and so on, only to experience the discomfort of anxiety about potential DDOS attacks and the reality of dying in the process. – SodaPoppin
Blizzard saves World of Warcraft players
According to a statement from World of Warcraft’s community manager Kaivax, Blizzard plans to restore characters that perished during the DDoS attacks. Although not all characters can be brought back, the company aims to resuscitate those who unfortunately lost their lives due to the hackers.
Hey fellow gamers, I’ve got some news to share. Lately, we’ve been hit with some massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assaults that have disrupted several Blizzard game services. But don’t worry! We’re working tirelessly to bring back the characters that were unfortunately snuffed out due to these attacks.
Now, let me clarify something. Losing your character in a Hardcore mode is one thing, but the DDoS attacks are a whole different ball game. These aren’t ordinary ways characters meet their end; they’re malicious attempts by shady external forces to disrupt our gaming experience. Given the severity and impact of these attacks, we feel it’s only fair to handle them differently.
The community manager clarified that their policy regarding the restoration or resurrection of characters hasn’t been altered. Characters who perish due to lag, technical glitches, or disconnections won’t be brought back to life. But if a widespread cyber-attack (like a DDoS attack) leads to character death, those deaths might be undone.
In the future, Blizzard has the option – using their own judgment – to bring back Hardcore characters who die during an incident they consider inappropriate for the game’s authenticity, such as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This is according to their statement.
