As a long-time fan of the Happy Death Day series, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation at the prospect of a third installment. The first film was a refreshing take on the slasher genre, with its clever time loop premise and Jessica Rothe’s charismatic performance as Tree. The sequel, while not quite living up to the original, still managed to provide some enjoyable moments.
Director Christopher Landon recently provided an update on Happy Death Day 3.
In the year 2017, Landon was at the helm of the successful Blumhouse production “Happy Death Day.” This movie featured Jessica Rothe as Tree, a character who is mysteriously murdered on her birthday and finds herself living the same day repeatedly due to a time loop. This predicament grants her multiple chances to identify her killer. The humorous slasher film, which blends elements of comedy with horror, grossed $125.5 million at the box office despite its relatively small budget of $4.8 million. A sequel titled “Happy Death Day 2U” followed in 2019.
Although Happy Death Day 2U garnered substantial profits with earnings of $64.6 million against its production cost of only $9 million, it did not achieve the same level of success as the initial film. As a result, plans for a third installment in the series have yet to be finalized.
At the New York Comic Con, Landon made an appearance at BlumFest to publicize his forthcoming thriller titled “Drop”. During this interaction, ComingSoon asked whether there might be a third installment of the popular horror series “Happy Death Day”.
Will there be another Happy Death Day?
Nothing has been confirmed yet. When asked about it, Landon joked, “You’re talking to the wrong guy. The guy who has no power, who has no control over anything in his life or outside of it.”
After that, he remarked, “I’d be more than happy to do it right away, but it’s ultimately a matter for Jason Blum and Universal to decide. The final call lies with those who hold the purse strings.
In the year 2020, Landon shared a concept for the third movie titled “Happy Death Day to Us.” He further revealed in February 2023 that he had presented this idea to Universal. The first two movies were developed by Blumhouse Productions and featured Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Phi Vu, and Ruby Modine as the main stars.
