Halo’s battle royale reportedly ported to UE5 and renamed ‘Project Ekur’

As a dedicated Halo fan since the days of the original Xbox, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing about Project Ekur, the rumored Halo battle royale game. It seems we’ve been on this rollercoaster ride for quite some time now, with twists and turns that would put Master Chief himself to the test.

We’ve been talking about the Halo battle royale since Infinite released, but at the time, all we know was that it was called Project Tatanka.

Previously this year, we unfortunately learned that Project Tatanka, as reported by our source, has allegedly been terminated.

Currently, there are reports that the BR has resumed operation. It seems that Project Tatanka didn’t cease to exist as initially thought, but rather, it appears to have gone through a significant change instead…

Halo battle royale ported to Unreal Engine 5, possibly now an extraction shooter

As per Rebs Gaming, a YouTube content creator who has just released an extensive review on the Halo Battle Rifle, the project underwent a name change and was moved to Unreal Engine 5, now referred to as “Ekur”. In Greek mythology, Ekur is the name of a garden mirroring Mount Olympus, which happened to be the codename for Halo Infinite.

Here is an overview of the claims made in the video:

  • Tatanka was scrapped for Halo Infinite in 2022 when 343 began considering Unreal Engine for Halo’s future.
  • Around the same time, Certain Affinity began reworking Tatanka into what’s now called Project Ekur.
  • 343’s team wasn’t heavily involved in the details of Ekur.
  • One source believes Certain Affinity moved Tatanka to Unreal Engine 5, transforming it into Ekur, while another speculates it may be an extraction shooter.
  • The Ekur file remains in Halo Studio’s database, suggesting it’s not canceled.
  • Certain Affinity was recently acquired by Keywords Studios and is working on several undisclosed projects.

Due to Halo Infinite struggling to keep players since its release, it’s truly unfortunate that the Battle Royale mode wasn’t rolled out sooner. However, with a “new dawn” on the horizon for Halo, maybe this project will lead the revival of the series.

We’re ecstatic about the latest update and have always advocated for a Halo-style battle royale. It’s an ideal fit for this franchise given its expansive settings, intense encounters, and diverse vehicle options.

Instead of Halo battle royale, wouldn’t you rather play it, or do you agree that the battle royale genre seems to be losing popularity?
