As a die-hard Halo fan since the days of the original Xbox, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and disappointment upon hearing the latest news about mod support for the Master Chief Collection (MCC) on Xbox. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see the modding community flourish on PC, with hilarious pirate adventures added to Halo 3 and the long-awaited release of the infamous Halo 2 E3 demo. However, as a console player, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy, like watching my friends play with cool custom maps in Call of Duty while I’m stuck with the default ones.
The freshly revamped Halo Studios under Xbox is busy developing various new projects within the renowned Halo video game series, in addition to upcoming enhancements for the free-to-play game Halo Infinite. Yet, enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating additional updates for the ten-year-old Master Chief Collection, with many expressing a desire for modding capabilities on Xbox platforms.
During a conversation with VideoGamer, John Junyszek – who manages the Halo community and handles operations for Infinite – mentioned that there’s a possibility they could introduce mod support for the Master Chief Collection on Xbox, though it seems quite improbable at this time.
“Never say Never”, says Halo Studios
Over the past year, there’s been an incredible surge in modding for Master Chief Collection on PC. Among the amusing mods that insert pirate tales into Halo 3, both enthusiasts and Halo Studios have collaborated to make the legendary Halo 2 E3 demo playable for fans for the first time ever.
For gamers playing the series on Xbox platforms, there’s been a growing demand for the ability to modify content due to its renowned “missing pieces”. In an interview with VideoGamer, Junyszek stated that this task is quite substantial and they currently can’t guarantee it, but there might be a chance for it in the future.
Junyszek shared with VideoGamer that it’s thrilling to assist the Digsite team in making the legendary Halo 2 E3 demo available on MCC through Steam Workshop. For years, playing this demo has been a wish for Halo enthusiasts, and now it can be realized thanks to the commitment and zeal of members within the Halo modding community. Although we won’t rule out future possibilities, integrating modded content into Xbox is significantly more complex than using Steam Workshop, making it currently beyond our capabilities to support at this time.
To enable mods on Xbox, Halo Studios might have to develop their own interface or integrate Mod.IO functionality into the Master Chief Collection. However, with the studio currently working on Infinite as well as numerous other projects for both Xbox Series and PC, adding mod support for Xbox One and Xbox Series could be a challenging task due to their busy workload.
However, there is hope that, one day, mods can come to MCC on Xbox. We certainly hope so.
