Halo Studios helped Obsidian create much better combat for The Outer Worlds 2, just like Id did for Fallout

The upcoming sequel from Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds 2, appears to surpass the original game significantly. Although the high initial cost of $80 remains a concern, Obsidian is blending aspects of Fallout New Vegas rewards with Deus Ex-inspired immersive gaming mechanics and, unexpectedly, Halo-style weapon play.

Halo devs helped make The Outer Worlds 2

343 Industries, freshly revamped as Halo Studios, is diligently working on their Unreal Engine 5 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, set for release in 2026. Simultaneously, they are aiding Obsidian in enhancing the gunplay mechanics for their upcoming role-playing game.

Much like how Id Software collaborated with Bethesda Game Studios on the gunplay in Fallout 4, Halo Studios has been providing guidance to Obsidian Entertainment on the weapon mechanics for The Outer Worlds 2. According to game director Brandon Adler, they have been engaging in a back-and-forth with the lead Xbox studio to ensure that combat is enjoyable.

As a fervent admirer, I can share that in crafting The Outer Worlds 2’s gunplay, Adler drew inspiration from the dynamic combat systems seen in Halo and Bungie’s Destiny. In fact, they delved deeply into a comprehensive analysis of Destiny, as we at the team are captivated by the exhilarating feel it offers.

The Halo developers meticulously worked on each weapon in The Outer Worlds 2, aiming to give each one a distinct feel that sets it apart from the others. Although Obsidian’s RPG may feature more weapons than a sandbox-style shooter like Halo, they are striving to make every weapon as unique and standout as possible.

The game director stated that they preferred significant alterations over minor ones, explaining each weapon in the game offers a distinct feel with its own special, unique function. Furthermore, players are given the opportunity to customize these weapons with modifications, allowing for a variety of extraordinary capabilities.

The sequel to The Outer Worlds, titled The Outer Worlds 2, is planned for release on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 on October 29, 2025. It’s unclear if a Nintendo Switch version will also be available, but since Microsoft has shown support for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, there may be possibilities for a portable version of the game in the future.
