Halo Combat Evolved VR mod brings Bungie’s sci-fi epic into virtual reality

Halo Combat Evolved VR mod brings Bungie’s sci-fi epic into virtual reality

As a long-time fan who’s been through countless hours of alien-blasting action in the original Halo Combat Evolved, I can confidently say that this VR mod is an absolute game-changer! It’s like stepping into Master Chief’s armor and fighting the Covenant all over again, but this time with a virtual reality twist.

For numerous enthusiasts of Xbox’s initial blockbuster game, Halo Combat Evolved, a brand-new VR modification is a long-awaited realization. This innovative adaptation marks the first time that the renowned first-person shooter enters the realm of virtual reality.

The Halo VR mod, which was crafted by modder LivingFray, isn’t compatible with the widely used Master Chief Collection. Instead, it represents a complete virtual reality (VR) conversion for the initial 2003 PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Halo Combat Evolved VR conversion released

Here you can find the latest virtual reality modification, which is an exciting development that gamers have been eagerly anticipating. Not only does it allow players to immerse themselves in the game within a VR headset, but it also offers six-dimensional freedom when aiming weapons, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

For an even more engaging gaming experience, the latest update includes immersive crouching, realistic hand-to-hand fighting, and a feature that allows you to switch on your torch simply by tapping your virtual head – similar to activating Detective Vision in Arkham Knight.

The first launch of Combat Evolved in VR encountered a few problems. To illustrate, getting into and out of vehicles may cause slight discomfort due to jolts. Moreover, the vehicles themselves might not be suitable for those prone to motion sickness.

Despite the past VR mod for the Master Chief Collection being abandoned, this new adaptation of Combat Evolved is a long-awaited delight for many gamers. Previously, there was a project underway for a VR version years ago, but that has since been shelved. However, to enjoy this conversion, you’ll need to install the original PC version from 2003 first, yet it remains an outstanding way to experience the game.

The modder explained that they were trying their hand at dissecting and altering a game engine that’s kept secret for the first time. This involves learning how to break down, examine, and adjust x86 assembly code. As you might surmise, this is quite challenging. To make things easier, I’ve chosen an older game for my project since it has fewer updates and technological advancements to deal with over a period of two decades.

As a dedicated Halo gamer, I’d recommend checking out an interesting tale: The games’ legendary multiplayer announcer almost got the role of Master Chief instead of Steve Downes. If that’s not your cup of tea, there’s another captivating story about the conclusion of 343 Industries and the emergence of the new Halo Studios.
