Halo: Combat Evolved Remake reportedly planned to release in late 2026

During Microsoft’s latest Xbox Games Showcase, there was a multitude of new games unveiled and even a sneak peek at an upcoming Xbox PC handheld device. However, many of the company’s iconic game series were missing from the event. In a closing hint, Xbox head Phil Spencer suggested that the teased remake of Halo: Combat Evolved could potentially launch in 2026.

Halo: Combat Evolved Remake teased for 2026

Prior to the tearful conclusion of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, hinted that 2026 would be an exceptional year for the Xbox brand. Alongside the launch of the thrilling Gears of War: E-Day prequel, Xbox enthusiasts can also anticipate a fresh, unannounced Forza game.

To start and finish the discussion, Spencer made it clear that the year will conclude with “the comeback of an old favorite that has been around since the start”, hinting at the rumored plans for Halo Studios’ complete overhaul of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, following their recent name change.

According to Tom Warren from The Verge, it’s expected that we’ll get a complete overhaul of the original Halo: Combat Evolved game in 2026, marking both the 25th anniversary of Xbox and the celebrated first-person shooter franchise.

For quite some time, Warren, being deeply ingrained within the Xbox family, has maintained a steady stance regarding the Halo: Combat Evolved Remake. It’s been reported with high accuracy that this upcoming remake will debut on both Xbox and PC systems. There are also discussions ongoing for a possible release on PlayStation 5 at a future point.

Last year, Xbox and Halo Studios subtly hinted at a remake of the Classic Edition through their studio update video. Although they didn’t explicitly confirm it, the demonstration of Unreal Engine 5 for the game featured a refurbished Mark V Master Chief wielding a Magnum and Energy Sword, as well as visually enhanced environments from the original game.

As a diehard fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the new take on the original Halo game, hoping for substantial enhancements. Possibly, we’ll see the introduction of tough adversaries such as Brutes and Engineers, along with an enlarged arsenal of weapons for a more dynamic experience. Furthermore, changes in the cutscenes could be implemented to align the storyline better with epic novels like The Fall of Reach, First Strike, and others, deepening our immersion into the rich Halo lore.

It remains unclear whether the upcoming remake will incorporate a multiplayer mode or if it will solely focus on single-player, with the possibility that online multiplayer continues in the ongoing free-to-play game Halo Infinite. This could mean that Halo Infinite might serve as the multiplayer hub for the series, much like how the multiplayer of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was part of Halo Reach.
