Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock Series Finds Its Moriarty

As a long-time fan of Sherlock Holmes, with memories of Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett dueling it out on my old television set, I must admit that I am thoroughly intrigued by Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Young Sherlock” series. The prospect of Guy Ritchie, a director known for his flair for action and wit, taking the reins is an exciting one.

The upcoming Amazon Prime Video series titled “Young Sherlock” has added another actor to its expanding ensemble, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin (known for his roles in the “After” films and “The Woman King”) joining the cast. This project is overseen by Guy Ritchie, who will both direct and produce, having previously worked with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law on Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ sequel.

The logline reads: “This is an exciting retelling of the early years of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s renowned detective, Sherlock Holmes. At 19, Sherlock is a disgraced, rough, and unpolished version of himself when he becomes embroiled in a murder case at Oxford University that could cost him his freedom. Jumping headfirst into his initial investigation with reckless abandon, Sherlock untangles an international conspiracy that will alter the course of his life forever.”

Who will play Moriarty in Young Sherlock?

In a new casting decision, “Wheel of Time” actor Donal Finn is set to play the role of James Moriarty, a character central to Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes tales. Moriarty is most famously recognized as the long-standing adversary of the title detective. Previously, Jared Harris portrayed this iconic character in the 2011 film “A Game of Shadows”, while Andrew Scott took on the role in the “Sherlock” series starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In a more recent adaptation, Sharon Duncan-Brewster portrayed a female version of Moriarty in “Enola Holmes 2” from 2022.

The up-and-coming TV series titled ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ will be penned and overseen by showrunner Matthew Parkhill. It has been announced that Finn will join the cast along with Joseph Fiennes (Silas Holmes), Natascha McElhone (Cordelia Holmes), Zine Tseng (Princess Gulun Shou’an), and Colin Firth (Sir Bucephalus Hodge). The series is also being executive produced by Lane, Simon Kelton, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Maxwell, Dhana Gilbert, Colin Wilson, Marc Resteghini, and Harriet Creelman.
