Gunaa re-release: Kamal Haasan starrer classic psychological romantic movie to hit big screens once again post legal dispute

As a die-hard Kamal Haasan fan who has been following his illustrious career since the 90s, I can’t contain my excitement over the impending re-release of the timeless masterpiece, Gunaa! This psychological romantic drama, which initially had a modest run at the box office back in 1991, is now set to captivate audiences once again on November 29, 2024.

The classic film “Gunaa,” starring Kamal Haasan, will be returning to theaters following a long hiatus. According to reports from industry expert Sreedhar Pillai, this psychological romantic drama is scheduled for release on the big screen once more on November 29, 2024.

The movie by director Santhana Bharathi first hit the big screen on November 5, 1991, but is now returning to theaters after many years have passed. Initially, it had a typical performance at the box office, although it received critical praise and eventually became a cult classic over time.

Originally planned for a theater rerelease on June 21, 2024, the film faced delay due to copyright disputes in the Madras High Court. But come September, the court order was rescinded.

As an ardent admirer, let me share my thoughts about the captivating film “Gunaa” starring none other than the legendary Kamal Haasan. In this masterpiece, Kamal Haasan dons the role of a man who’s just been released from a psychiatric institution, a character I can’t help but be fascinated by. This individual, suffering from mental instability, finds himself ensnared in a delusion that paints an imaginary wife as the embodiment of the divine Abhirami – a belief that adds an extra layer of intrigue to his story.

One day, I stumbled upon Rohini, a wealthy inheritor, and under a misguided belief that she was my spouse, I abducted her. The ensuing narrative revolves around the blossoming affection between us and their subsequent experiences post this incident.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but gush about this timeless masterpiece that brought together stars like Kamal Haasan, Roshini (making her screen debut), the legendary Rekha, Janagaraj, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Girish Karnad, and Sharat Saxena – all in pivotal roles. Although its run in theaters was brief, this film’s influence has only grown over time, even setting the stage for psychotic characters to become a staple in Tamil cinema.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: Interestingly enough, the backdrop where Devil’s Kitchen was filmed has since transformed into a renowned tourist destination, now widely recognized as Guna Caves. This breathtaking location served as the setting for the 2024 Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys, with its soundtrack heavily featuring the timeless hit “Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan” from Kamal Haasan’s repertoire.

In the future, Kamal Haasan recently starred as the main character in the movie titled “Indian 2”. This film is a follow-up to their successful collaboration from 1996, “Indian”, and it further develops the tale of the vigilante hero who battled against domestic corruption.

Additionally, the actor will soon be seen in the upcoming film titled “Thug Life,” which marks his reunion with acclaimed director Mani Ratnam. Notably, Silambarasan TR will also star as a lead character in this movie. Expectedly, it’s set to hit theaters on June 5, 2025.
