As a long-time NBC viewer with a keen eye for drama and a soft spot for underdogs, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and concern about the upcoming premiere of Grosse Pointe Garden Society. On one hand, the pedigree is impressive – the creators behind Good Girls are back with another intriguing premise, and the cast is a veritable who’s who of small-screen talent. It certainly has all the makings of a binge-worthy series that could easily fill the Desperate Housewives-shaped hole in my heart.
As a game enthusiast diving into my latest binge-worthy series, I’m eagerly awaiting the debut of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” on NBC. But here’s the question: Does it have the ideal time slot to keep me hooked and engaged?
NBC is concluding its 2024 lineup by disclosing the return dates for shows in winter 2025. Among them is the upcoming drama titled “Grosse Pointe Garden Society“. This series is created by Jenna Bans and Will Krebs, known for their work on the underestimated but well-liked crime comedy “Good Girls“. It revolves around the women of a neighborhood garden club, whose lives become entangled through scandal, mischief, and murder.
The program will make its premiere on NBC on February 23rd, Sunday, at 10/9 central time. However, one might wonder if that timeslot is truly ideal for this particular series.
Why Grosse Pointe Garden Society may have a bad time slot
At first glance, the show seems appealing to fans of series like “Desperate Housewives.” It brings together a diverse group of characters and boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Melissa Fumero from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” AnnaSophia Robb from “The Carrie Diaries,” Ben Rappaport from “For the People,” Matthew Davis from “Legacies,” Alexander Hodge from “Insecure,” Aja Naomi King from “Lessons in Chemistry,” Nancy Travis from “Last Man Standing,” and Felix Avitia from “Raven’s Home.
Yet, scheduling this slot presents a challenge. On one side, the program will be airing after the docuseries “The Americas” and the much-awaited “Suits: LA,” which could boost its visibility significantly. NBC is expected to give it a good marketing push to attract more viewers.
As a dedicated viewer, I’ve noticed that Sunday nights haven’t always been a golden hour for NBC. The network leans heavily on NFL football during fall Sundays and original content for midseason. In 2023, they had some moderate success with shows like Magnum PI and The Blacklist, but shows such as Good Girls didn’t quite hit the mark. Some years have seen them air extended episodes of Dateline instead of regular dramas on those nights.
Primarily, CBS has an advantage on Sundays due to popular dramas like “Tracker” and “The Equalizer,” whereas ABC offers shows such as “American Idol” and gameshows. This could potentially draw in more viewers for “Society,” but there’s also a chance that viewers may not feel compelled enough to tune in.
The issue isn’t alleviated by NBC’s reputation for launching numerous midseason series that often fail to make it past a single season. Given the risk of investing time into a show that may be canceled after only a handful of episodes, and considering this Sunday slot doesn’t seem to express much confidence in its longevity, viewers might approach it with caution.
Considering that NBC already has “One Chicago” airing on Wednesdays and “Law & Order” series on Thursdays, it’s understandable if they have limited space in their schedule. It’s also worth noting how “Desperate Housewives” gained popularity 20 years ago on Sundays. However, the time slot is a potential issue for fans who are eagerly anticipating this show to become NBC’s next big hit and a new favorite among viewers.
