As a seasoned gamer of life with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to the characters and stories that unfold in shows like Grey’s Anatomy. The recent departure of Mika, portrayed by Midori Francis, left me with a profound sense of empathy and admiration.
From the onset of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, we were aware that some characters would be leaving. Levi was the first to depart, and the season 21 fall finale marked the exit of another character, played by Midori Francis in her final appearance as Mika. This episode was particularly poignant, focusing on the theme of grief.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 8.
The discussion centered around a heatwave causing an overcrowded hospital, where one patient was suffering from heat stroke and required ice to lower his body temperature. But when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest, Mika, seeking solace from her sorrow by working, experienced a breakdown. She cried out for Bailey to rescue the man, then switched to pleading “save her” and “take me.
It was evident to Bailey that this situation was deeply affecting her, as she was dealing with grief following the loss of her mother. Toward the end of the episode, Bailey opened up about her own experience, revealing how she immersed herself in work after her mom’s death. If given a chance, she would allow herself more time to grieve and encouraged Mika to do the same.
Mika realized she couldn’t work at Grey Sloan Memorial in Grey’s Anatomy
Mika acknowledged, in a roundabout manner, that she had returned to work prematurely. However, she also discovered that it wasn’t solely about her job responsibilities. It wasn’t merely because she was dedicated to saving lives. Instead, it was the environment itself – the place where she found herself – that held significance for her.
Everything evoked thoughts of Chloe for her. Mika adores all her siblings, yet Chloe held a special place in her heart as her favorite. It was the sister she didn’t initially desire but got to choose a name for, which brought them closer together. That bond made it even more challenging for Mika when she lost Chloe. Although Mika wasn’t conscious during Chloe’s passing, knowing the room where it occurred and the subsequent thoughts it triggered made her mind wander. Uncertainty is always distressing.
In the end, Mika concluded that she couldn’t continue working at Grey Sloan Memorial. Regrettably, Bailey found herself in a position where she had to acknowledge and accept Mika’s resignation, despite valuing her greatly as an intern.
It’s still possible for Francis to come back to Grey’s Anatomy. Mika isn’t giving up on being a doctor; she just can’t practice at Grey Sloan Memorial. She might end up working somewhere else, similar to Izzy. Later on, we could see her return as proof that she’s succeeded in her career.
I still resent that we’re just getting some decent storylines for characters as they exit the show. However, when it comes to realism and importance, Mika’s storyline brings all that. Grief is terrible. As Simone said, it is the new normal and we just get easier dealing with it. Like Bailey said, death doesn’t make sense.
Indeed, the conclusion to Grey’s Anatomy season 21’s fall episode has left us in suspense, making us ponder if more lives could be at stake.
Grey’s Anatomy returns on Thursday, March 6 at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
