Grey’s Anatomy recap: Somehow, everyone survives

This recap contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, episode 9 “Hit the Floor.”

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, when I ponder over the captivating world of Grey’s Anatomy, a whirlwind of chaos is often the first thing that comes to mind. However, the midseason return defied expectations, for despite some chaotic incidents, the characters managed not just to endure but also make mostly wise decisions – an uncommon occurrence for many of them, yet a welcome twist. Let’s delve into each storyline in detail.

In the end, Amelia and Winston successfully perform a challenging joint operation, but the patient loses sensation in her legs as a result. Subsequently, following a daring follow-up treatment, she shows signs of recovery from paralysis. However, both physicians concur that they may not be ideal partners for future collaborations. Amelia remains keen on handling complex cases, while Winston expresses doubts about his ability to match her pace.

Jo and her twins manage to pull through from a difficult situation, but they’re vulnerable to premature labor or other issues due to the stress. A method exists to prevent these problems, but Link, being overly anxious as a father-to-be, refuses to let Jo undergo it. Bailey expels him from the room because his presence raises Jo’s blood pressure, but eventually manages to calm him down and bring him back. For the first time in what seems like ages, Jo and Link are in agreement, Jo gets the procedure done, and for now, this new family enjoys a peaceful existence.

Owen takes his old friend and possible romantic interest, who has been hurt during surgery and is still in pain, back to the hospital. She confesses to him that she’s had a crush on him since her teenage years, almost kissing him but not causing a scene. Later, he informs her about her improving health, only to step away from her care team after acknowledging that there are feelings mutual between them. He nearly shares this with Teddy, but the two choose not to bring it up further.

Warren receives justified criticism for instituting a questionable trauma response plan, which ultimately leads to a failed attempt at reconciliation with Teddy. For the majority of the episode, Warren collaborates with Adams and even assists him in overcoming a panic attack triggered by post-traumatic stress following an armed robbery. However, Teddy refuses to entertain Warren’s idea of forming an emergency response committee. Given her temporary position as a resident, Warren is reminded of his boundaries when she firmly sets him straight, ensuring he will think twice before overstepping them again.

From my perspective, it appears Blue and his former lover are eagerly preparing to rekindle their past affection, as if they never parted ways. However, a phone call from a potential suitor serves as a stark reminder of the intricacies hidden beneath the surface. He informs her that he can’t progress in our relationship until she ends things with her current partner, despite his reluctance to delay our reunion.

Lastly, Jules is still in shock following the unexpected departure of her intern-turned-love interest. This has left her so distracted that during surgery, she overlooks securing a patient on the table, causing him to slip off. Teddy sternly reprimands her, but doesn’t dismiss her from the operating room. Later, Jules seeks out Weber to express her apologies.

Initially, the potential gunman who received almost fatal injuries from his own bullet miraculously pulled through surgery, despite encountering difficulties. In the end, Adams and Simone found themselves entwined in each other’s embrace following a challenging day, while Jules appears to be feeling more isolated and reserved than ever. At this moment, though, things seem to be on an upward trend – better than anyone anticipated after everything that transpired.

This episode of Grey’s Anatomy is available to stream now on Hulu.
