Grey's Anatomy characters need to stop keeping big things from those they love

As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I must say that this latest turn of events involving Catherine Fox is making me want to pull my hair out! It seems like every season, there’s always at least one character who feels the need to keep a big secret from those they love. It’s not just annoying; it’s downright hurtful and frustrating to watch.

In a recent development on Grey’s Anatomy, Catherine Fox seems to be adhering to a familiar TV plot device: she harbors significant secrets that she isn’t sharing with those close to her. This particular narrative arc can be frustrating and painful to watch.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 2.

In Meredith’s office, she discovered Catherine unconscious, which led to a critical medical assessment. It appeared that Catherine’s cancer might be progressing further. Instead of hiding this information, Meredith shared it with Bailey and they both managed to persuade Catherine to undergo a scan examination at least.

It was then revealed that things were significantly worse than initially thought. Catherine has metastases in her liver, which suggests that her cancer might be progressing. Although Bailey suggested the possibility of these being benign, Catherine remains skeptical. However, she eventually consented to Meredith and Bailey performing a biopsy on her.

Catherine needs to be honest with Webber and Jackson in Grey’s Anatomy

Here’s the issue: Catherine remains tight-lipped about it. As of now, only Meredith and Bailey are aware, but it won’t take much time before Teddy uncovers the complete truth. However, Catherine insists on keeping Webber in the dark about it.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel that this plotline seems overly self-centered. It appears that Catherine is anxious about how others perceive her, but given the situation, it might be fair for Webber to know if there could be a significant health issue with his wife.

She’s hidden things from him in the past, causing him pain when he eventually discovered the truth. Unfortunately, she’s repeating this behavior now. Despite his deep affection for her (which I find puzzling given her personality), she’s causing him hurt once more.

Currently, the narrative feels less dramatic and more bothersome. It’s a familiar plot device that deserves to be phased out. Instead, let’s explore the drama arising from strong partnerships, as such relationships are seldom easy. In this case, Webber will urge Catherine to make a medical decision, while Catherine may have different ideas. This type of mutual support introduces its own set of challenges, and it’s high time the writers challenge themselves to present us with these complexities instead.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
