As a devoted fan of Greta Gerwig’s enchanting storytelling and her knack for breathing new life into classic tales, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the rumored IMAX release of her adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia! Her unique vision combined with the immersive experience of IMAX promises a magical journey that will undoubtedly leave audiences spellbound.
It’s unusual for Netflix, but there’s a possibility that Greta Gerwig’s version of “The Chronicles of Narnia” could be screened in IMAX theaters.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions are underway between Netflix and IMAX regarding the release of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia film in cinemas. It’s speculated that the movie will premiere on IMAX screens during Thanksgiving 2026, followed by streaming on Netflix around Christmas time. However, since Thanksgiving is a significant revenue-generating period for theaters, limiting screenings for IMAX could potentially lead to disagreements among theater owners.
Initial reports suggest that Greta Gerwig may discuss an IMAX release for her Narnia film, with plans to show it on approximately 2000 screens prior to its streaming release on Netflix. If this plan materializes, it could be a significant development.
According to reports, Greta Gerwig has been advocating for a cinema release, and it’s said that she even spoke directly to the CEO of Imax, Rich Gelfond. However, during an Imax earnings call on Wednesday, Gelfond neither confirmed nor dismissed the claims about their discussions regarding Gerwig’s project with Netflix.
Normally, Netflix premieres high-end films and chooses original productions to screen in a small number of cinemas so they can qualify for awards. The plan by Greta Gerwig is reminiscent of the 2022 release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which had a one-week exclusive cinema run during Thanksgiving. Prior to its Netflix debut in late December, Glass Onion earned $15 million at the box office.
What is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie about?
Back in 2018, Netflix obtained the rights to produce films and television series based on C.S. Lewis’ Narnia novels. As of July 2023, Greta Gerwig has confirmed her participation in The Chronicles of Narnia project. This four-time Academy Award nominee is currently working on penning and directing two Narnia movies for Netflix.
In other words, Greta Gerwig’s debut as a director after Barbie was with The Chronicles of Narnia. This film starring Margot Robbie was the top earner in 2023 and earned eight Oscar nominations.
There haven’t been any confirmed announcements about the cast yet. Nonetheless, it’s speculated that Louis Partridge will be playing a part in the movie.
The Chronicles of Narnia was previously adapted into three feature films in 2005, 2008, and 2010.
