Today, Alphabet, Google’s holding company, revealed plans for a fresh infusion of funds totaling $5 billion into its autonomous vehicle division. Further details will be disclosed in an upcoming Securities and Exchange Commission document.

Today, Alphabet announced its second quarter earnings for 2024, disclosing an additional $5 billion investment in its self-driving car division, Waymo. According to the finance chief, Ruth Porat, this investment aims to further develop Waymo into a global leader in autonomous driving technology.

Previously in March 2022, Tekedra Mawakana, one of Waymo’s co-CEOs, announced their readiness to initiate driverless delivery services in San Francisco. During the latest conference call, Sundar Pichai, another CEO of Waymo, revealed that they offer around 50,000 weekly trips in both San Francisco and Phoenix.

According to a CNBC article, Waymo secured $2.25 billion in investments during their initial fundraising in 2020, followed by an additional $2.5 billion in funding the next year. (Or) In 2020, Waymo garnered $2.25 billion through its first round of funding, and in 2021, it brought in another $2.5 billion.

At the moment, Alphabet is intensifying its efforts towards autonomous vehicles, with Tesla (TSLA) planning to debut its own Robotaxi service around the same time. In Tesla’s Q2 2024 financial report, they announced that this Robotaxi launch is now scheduled for October 10 – a date that was previously set for August 8.
