Retired WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg, who is planning to step away from wrestling later this year, reminisces about the missed opportunity to square off with John Cena. In 2024, Goldberg made a memorable appearance at WWE Bad Blood, engaging in a heated altercation with Gunther that required security intervention to cool down. Their electrifying standoff was unforgettable.
After that meeting, Goldberg declared his comeback to WWE in 2025 for his farewell bout. There’s been a lot of talk about who his last opponent might be, with many suggesting that Gunther could be the one to go up against him.
There’s much discussion about who Goldberg might face in his last match. Notably, the WWE Hall of Famer has stated that he wouldn’t share the ring with John Cena. Likewise, Cena, who is also wrapping up his career, plans to retire by the end of this year.
Even though Goldberg has battled high-profile WWE competitors like Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, The Undertaker, and Kevin Owens following his 2016 comeback, the opportunity to engage in a match against 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena has eluded him. As Goldberg prepares for retirement, he expresses his excitement about the prospect of facing Cena in a contest.
Goldberg opens up on a potential match with John Cena
In an interview with The Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg reminisced about never having the opportunity to wrestle against John Cena and expressed his excitement about the potential matchup. He said, “I missed out on wrapping my hands around Cena’s neck, which could have been thrilling. Many people I would have enjoyed squaring off against in the past, but the question is, what good does that do for the wrestling industry today? Unfortunately, many modern wrestling fans don’t even recognize me, and many who do have a negative opinion of me. I believe I was something of an innovator. There are numerous others like me.” [Source: Fightful]
In conversation about a possible fight with John Cena, Goldberg hinted at the prospect of another battle with Roman Reigns or squaring off against up-and-coming talent Bron Breakker. As his last match nears, speculation swirls around whom he’ll encounter in his final showdown.
