As a die-hard fan of both Godzilla and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but feel a thrill running down my spine when I hear about Takashi Yamazaki’s meeting with Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the MCU. The thought of Yamazaki potentially joining the ranks of MCU directors is tantalizing, like a mouth-watering bowl of ramen teasing your taste buds before you take that first bite.
Takashi Yamazaki is a renowned Japanese director whose work, particularly the film “Godzilla Minus One,” has garnered significant acclaim. This movie was the 33rd installment in Toho’s Godzilla series and received critical and commercial success, earning numerous awards, such as the Best Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards. Notably, Yamazaki has mentioned a meeting with the head of Marvel Studios, likely referring to Kevin Feige.
Godzilla Minus One director reveals what Marvel’s Kevin Feige told him
At Godzilla Fest 2024, Yamazaki spoke about Godzilla Minus One, praising the exceptional international acclaim it’s received, and then shared a story involving his meeting with the head of Marvel.
He said, “The president of Marvel told me, ‘Wadatsumi!’” (via VirtualGorilla+)
It appears that the “Marvel president” mentioned here is likely Feige. Interestingly, “Wadatsumi” is a term used in reference to Operation Wadatsumi, the decisive operation in Godzilla Minus One aimed at defeating the titular kaiju. This term originates from a water deity in ancient Japanese mythology.
Reflecting on our conversation, I can’t help but recall him saying, “Every day, we’re holding discussions to try and bring it to life as he suggested.” However, it feels more like empty promises to me.
A few days past, it was revealed that Yamazaki will be directing the upcoming Godzilla film from Toho. At a recent gathering, Yamazaki shared that he had received an exceptional opportunity abroad, but chose not to take on another Godzilla project.
Despite Yamazaki possibly perceiving the Marvel executive’s words as empty promises, he could still be a fantastic choice for directing in the MCU. Apart from Godzilla Minus One, Yamazaki has directed films like Juvenile (2000), Space Battleship Yamato (2010), Parasyte: Part 1 (2014), Parasyte: Part 2 (2015), and Stand by Me Doraemon 2 (2020).
Yamazaki personally wrote the script for the film named “Godzilla Minus One,” which he also directed. This movie boasts an impressive 99% approval rating following 206 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It raked in $116.4 million worldwide, while its production cost was between $10–15 million. Its Oscar victory marked a significant milestone for the Godzilla franchise, as no other movie within this series had previously received such a prestigious award.
