As a dedicated fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say, the news about the God of War TV series going back to square one leaves me both apprehensive and intrigued. My first encounter with Kratos was back in 2005, and his journey has been a rollercoaster ride ever since.
The God of War television series adaptation is going back to square one.
2022 saw the official commissioning by Prime Video for a God of War live-action TV show, modeled after the widely acclaimed PlayStation game. This series is said to center around the main character, who goes by Kratos in the narrative.
Consequently, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios find themselves restarting the project anew, as showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have parted ways following completion of scripts for the intended initial season.
Why did the EPs and showrunner exit the God of War TV Series?
According to Deadline’s report, the original showrunner and executive producers have departed the project because the studios are choosing to explore a new creative path. Interestingly, the scripts for Season 1 had garnered positive feedback from both Sony and Prime, as per a source familiar with the matter.
It appears that reports indicate the studios are considering bringing on fresh showrunners and writers for the God of War TV series. The current executive producers for this project include Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Land, and Roy Lee.
The series of video games known as God of War was initially launched by PlayStation back in 2005. This expansive franchise encompasses several titles such as God of War: Betrayal, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, God of War: A Call from the Wilds, and God of War Ragnarök, with many more games in its roster.
According to Amazon’s description (as reported by Deadline), the series centers around Kratos, who has retired from his violent past in ancient Greece. After the death of his wife, he embarks on a perilous journey with his son Atreus to fulfill her last wish: scattering her ashes at the highest peak. Unbeknownst to him, this journey turns out to be an epic quest that challenges the bond between father and son and requires Kratos to confront new deities and creatures for the fate of the world.
