Gladiator II Producer Explain Why May Calamawy’s Character Was Cut From the Movie

As a die-hard fan of Ridley Scott and his epic masterpieces, I must say I was quite excited to see Moon Knight’s May Calamawy grace the silver screen in Gladiator II. However, as a seasoned moviegoer who has weathered many a production change, I can understand why Douglas Wick had to make tough decisions about what stays and what goes in the final cut of the film.

Douglas Wick, the producer of Gladiator II, has shared the reason behind the omission of May Calamawy’s character in the Ridley Scott sequel film.

Back in November of 2024, I was thrilled to witness the big-screen debut of Gladiator II here in the United States. This time around, Scott took the helm as director, and he didn’t disappoint! The cast is a powerhouse, with Paul Mescal stepping into the role of Lucius Verus Aurelius, Pedro Pascal bringing General Acacius to life, Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla, and Denzel Washington joining us as Macrinus. Can’t wait to see these incredible actors in action!

Moon Knight’s actress, May Calamawy, was initially cast for a role in Gladiator II, but unfortunately, her scenes didn’t make it into the final version of the film.

What did Gladiator II producer Douglas Wick say about May Calamawy’s character?

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Wick clarified the reason for her character’s absence when questioned about it being due to the film needing “to trim itself down.

Sure thing! “Absolutely, it’s quite evident,” Wick replied. “Given our current state, we’re already a lengthy film. In simpler terms, we can’t stretch it any further, and you need to focus on what works best and what is essential. There was a touching scene where Connie bid farewell to Pedro’s character, but these decisions about what’s crucial have to be made.

Originally, Ridley Scott had a 3-hour, 40-minute version of Gladiator 3 before its release, but the final cut has been reduced to 2 hours and 28 minutes.

The synopsis for Gladiator II reads, “From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”

Gladiator II is now playing in United States theaters.
