What did Denzel Washington say about Gladiator II?
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Washington explained that his decision to join a high-pressure movie stemmed from the exciting news that Ridley Scott was coming back to the production.
“I don’t have many more films left that excite me, and I need to be motivated by the director, and Ridley was an incredible source of inspiration,” stated Washington. “We had a fantastic initial collaboration on American Gangster, and now, we’ve reunited.”
According to Washington, he teamed up with Scott in the 2007 film, American Gangster. This movie was praised by critics and garnered two Academy Award nominations – one for Best Art Direction and another for Best Supporting Actress.
In the director’s seat for Gladiator 2 is Scott, with a screenplay penned by David Scarpa. The main role of Lucius, son of Lucilla and nephew of Emperor Commodus (previously played by Spencer Treat Clark in the first film), is taken on by Paul Mescal. Additionally, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, May Calamawy, Lior Raz, and others are set to appear in the sequel alongside Washington and Mescal. Notably, returning cast members Connie Nielsen as Lucilla and Derek Jacobi as Gracchus will also be reprising their roles.
“From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people,” reads the synopsis.
