Gladiator 3: Ridley Scott Teases Potential Third Movie, Discusses Plot Details

As a die-hard fan of the original Gladiator, I can hardly contain my excitement about the potential third installment! The first film was a cinematic masterpiece that left a lasting impact on me, and its sequel is finally hitting theaters in 2024.

Gladiator 3 may be happening.

2000 saw the debut of the first Gladiator film, masterfully directed by Ridley Scott. In this epic production, Russell Crowe portrayed Maximus Meridius, while Joaquin Phoenix took on the role of Commodus. The movie was an undeniable success, earning a staggering $465.4 million worldwide. It also garnered numerous accolades, including Best Picture and Best Actor (for Russell Crowe), at the Academy Awards.

A sequel, Gladiator II, is now releasing in United States theaters this coming November.

In conversation with Premiere, Scott mentioned that he’s been contemplating the possibility of a sequel titled Gladiator 3, and he has some thoughts on how the plot might progress further.

What did Ridley Scott say about a potential Gladiator 3?

As a gamer, I’m seriously considering diving back into the arena of Gladiator 3. The ending of Gladiator II had me feeling like Michael Corleone at the end of The Godfather, unsure of what my next move should be. It seems the story will revolve around a character who doesn’t want to be in his current position.

Paul Mescal, who plays a role in Gladiator II, mentioned that Ridley Scott recently discussed Gladiator 3 with him, only yesterday. Therefore, he’s eagerly waiting to learn more about the project but emphasizes that they must take their time to ensure the story is well-developed and cohesive.

Besides Mescal, the cast of Gladiator II includes Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, and Derek Jacobi.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott, Gladiator II carries on the grand tale of power struggles, deception, and revenge in ancient Rome. After many years, Lucius (played by Paul Mescal) is compelled to fight in the Colosseum following his home’s conquest by the ruthless emperors who now rule Rome with a tight grip. Driven by anger and determined to save the Empire, Lucius seeks solace in his past to find courage and integrity needed to restore the grandeur of Rome for its citizens.

In U.S. cinemas, the sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II,” is set for release on November 22, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
