Gladiator 2’s Paul Mescal Was ‘Incapacitated’ Working With Denzel Washington

Paul Mescal has admitted that the concept of working alongside Denzel Washington in Gladiator 2 left him completely spellbound.

In an interview with GQ, the star of Normal People opened up about working alongside acting legend, Washington. “I had been worrying myself over it,” Mescal admitted as he spoke about his feelings before filming their scenes. “I’d think, ‘Today is the day Denzel will be on set.’ And in the end, I was so overwhelmed by it that I realized, ‘This is just ridiculous. I have a job to do.’

Denzel Washington commended Paul Mescal for his performance in Gladiator 2, stating that he is adept at what he does and it’s effortless to collaborate with him because he consistently delivers. “He possesses a quiet yet powerful dignity, strength, and intelligence,” said The Equalizer star, “even when simply standing still.

In the sequel to Gladiator, Paul Mescal takes on the role of Lucius, the child of a previous Roman empress named Lucilla. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington is cast as a wealthy and influential figure who manages a group of gladiators. As events progress, Lucius played by Mescal ends up in the arena, under the management of Washington’s character.

Gladiator 2 comes out in theaters on November 22, 2024.
