As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual and real-life entertainment, I must say that the news of Paul Mescal hosting Saturday Night Live has me thoroughly excited! The young Irish actor has proven his mettle on the silver screen and now he’s set to conquer the small screen.
The young Irish actor Paul Mescal, who’s set to appear in the upcoming film Gladiator II, has been announced as the host for Saturday Night Live. This marks his debut as the guest host on the famed NBC late-night live comedy show.
Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal to host new Saturday Night Live episode with Shaboozey
In a break between programs on November 16, it was revealed that Mescal would be taking over hosting duties for SNL Season 50’s eighth episode. This occurred during an episode where Charli XCX served as both host and musical performer. The date set for Mescal’s episode is December 7, 2024, with Shaboozey scheduled to appear as the musical guest. Prior to Mescal, Pedro Pascal had previously hosted SNL in Season 48, while also making an appearance in one of the subsequent episodes.
SNL, which made its television debut in October 1975, is recognized as a significant achievement to be one of its guest hosts. Legendary comedian George Carlin was the inaugural host of SNL, while actor Alec Baldwin presently holds the record for hosting the show the highest number of times (a total of 17 episodes).
It’s interesting to note that Denzel Washington, who has won the Oscar twice and is set to star alongside Mescal in the Gladiator sequel, has never hosted Saturday Night Live. This puts him in a select group of prominent Hollywood stars such as Al Pacino, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise, who have also never hosted SNL.
28-year-old actor Mescal, who’s been working since the late 2010s, boasts a remarkable body of work spanning stage, screen, and television. In 2022, he won a Laurence Olivier Award for portraying Stanley Kowalski in a 2022 revival of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Mescal gained significant recognition for his role as Connell Waldron in the miniseries Normal People on BBC Three, Hulu, and RTÉ One. Since then, he’s been praised in critically acclaimed films like Aftersun (2022) and All of Us Strangers (2023). This Friday, Gladiator II, his first major film project, premieres in US theaters.
