The chilling tale of Jonelle Matthews’ disappearance and eventual murder has left me both horrified and intrigued. The twists and turns in this case are as unpredictable as a Colorado blizzard, with each new development sending shivers down my spine.
In their latest true crime offering, Oxygen delves into the enigmatic disappearance of a 12-year-old girl named Jonelle Matthews in December 1984, Colorado. Initial investigations at her home failed to unearth substantial evidence, but in 2019, her remains were found in a remote field in Greeley, Colorado. A year after the grim discovery, police apprehended and accused a man named Steve Pankey of Jonelle’s murder.
As reported by CBS News, officers conducted a search of the Matthews residence but failed to discover compelling proof. The only evidence uncovered were footprints in the snow. Furthermore, it was stated that someone had attempted to obliterate these footprints using a garden rake. This unsolved mystery has baffled investigators for years and even gained national attention, sparking public concern about their security. However, in 2019, when Jonelle Matthews’ body was discovered by police, they determined that the perpetrator had fatally shot the victim in the head.
The inquiry progressed, leading to Steve Pankey as a potential suspect due to his persistent efforts to interfere in the investigation. As per Oxygen, Pankey discussed undisclosed evidence with the investigators, and it was noted that he possessed a firearm during the kidnapping incident in 1984. In 2020, police apprehended Pankey and indicted him for kidnapping and first-degree murder. Although the first trial ended as a mistrial, Pankey was eventually convicted of the kidnapping and homicide of Jonelle Matthews. According to The New York Times, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment with the opportunity for parole after 20 years.
Steve Pankey is currently serving out his prison term at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility, located in Ordway, Colorado.
Where is Jonelle Matthews’ killer Steve Pankey now?
Previously stated, Steve Pankey currently lives at a correctional facility in Colorado. In the trial, the prosecutors presented evidence they claimed proved Pankey’s role in the case. Despite no DNA evidence incriminating Pankey, the prosecution utilized his statements to establish his involvement. Referencing the prosecution, CBS News reported, “The evidence in this case will demonstrate … that the defendant is guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping.”
During the court proceedings, Steve Pankey’s former spouse provided testimony as well. In her statement, she disclosed that Steve made her listen to updates about the Jonelle Matthews case. Additionally, she discovered a legal document bearing Pankey’s handwriting, which stated that snow had been cleared outside the Matthews family home. Yet, the defense contended that their client was not liable for the death of Jonelle Matthews.
Subsequently, Pankey testified regarding his case, asserting his innocence. Yet, he acknowledged fabricating details concerning the case. He expressed, “In truth, I concocted many tales due to resentment. It was merely an attempt to appear significant, relevant in this case, you see? I had no information.”
Following numerous statements and debates, the jury retired to consider their decision. Unfortunately, they were unable to agree on a ruling for the accusations of kidnapping and homicide. Consequently, the court was forced to declare this case as a hung jury trial.
The trial resumed in October 2022, and on this occasion, the jury decided that Steve Pankey was responsible for first-degree murder and kidnapping, as reported by The New York Times. However, despite receiving a guilty verdict, Mr. Pankey maintained his innocence, stating, “I am a Christian, I will be in heaven, and I am innocent. This is not justice for Jonelle.”
