GI Joe Comic Series is a GAME CHANGER

Lately, I’ve been reading the initial three volumes of the latest GI Joe series from Image Comics, and I must say, it didn’t disappoint. Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire have really hit the mark with this one. The tales of Cobra Commander, Duke, and Destro were captivating, making me eager to read more. However, Scarlett’s story in the second volume didn’t resonate with me as much, so I’ll move past it swiftly and continue enjoying the rest!

The GI Joe series by Image Comics commences when the escalating battles of the Transformers leave Earth strewn with enigmatic energon-related artifacts. In the debut issue, the newly established GI Joe special forces confront lethal and mysterious adversaries, whether they be alien or not, despite initial hiccups. At the same time, COBRA’s sway expands as Cobra Commander fortifies his alliance with Destro’s MARS Industries. The commander aims to showcase COBRA’s might and seeks to capture further alien technology to reveal COBRA’s presence worldwide. Ironically, while on the disadvantaged side of the tech war, the Joes are assigned to transport and safeguard the same cache of cybertronian technology.

Topic 2 delves into the results and subsequent events following the raid. Topic 3 uncovers tension within both groups as they grapple with their own internal conflicts. I encourage you to explore this tale further if you’re interested, as it’s truly captivating!

The creative team consistently impresses me by modernizing and intensifying the laser weaponry from ’80s cartoons into a more serious context. They’ve skillfully blended iconic settings and comic book elements to create a harmonious universe. I find myself appreciating many of their character choices, particularly Duke and Cobra Commander. Duke’s leadership is influenced by his personal war experiences, giving him both heroic qualities and a quick temper during challenging times. The rest of the Joes are a diverse group, each excelling in their respective fields but struggling to work together effectively due to their varied backgrounds. After suffering setbacks, I’m confident they’ll learn from their mistakes. On the other hand, Cobra Commander is an intriguing combination of characters from GI Joe Renegades, Resolute, and elements from the 1987 movie. His tactics revolve around fear, brutality, and scientific genius. Destro is equally formidable, exuding confidence as he wields his extensive arsenal, which includes advanced energon technology. With COBRA’s growing weaponry and technological advancements, they appear ready for war.

One aspect that consistently appeals to me in this series is its self-contained nature, allowing me to follow along without needing to read spin-offs such as Void Rivals or Transformers. Although they aren’t essential reading, their influence is noticeable within these stories, sparking my interest to explore those series further for a more comprehensive understanding. The writer skillfully employs the art of “show, don’t tell” and avoids overwhelming exposition drawn from other series. Additionally, fans of the Classified line of 6-inch figures will appreciate the integration of many designs from this collection. I certainly did! It’s a fantastic demonstration of brand synergy.

I guess if I had to nit pick at this, the only thing that bothered me was a panel in the first issue where it looked like I needed 3D glasses or something, or maybe it was just my copy(?). Other than that, I’ve enjoyed Tom Riley’s art and Jordie Bellaire’s colors on this project. They keep it on the cartoonish-side, but at the same time gritty, and deadly, enough for an action comic about terrorists and counter terrorists sprinkled with giant robot aliens. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I sincerely hope that this team keeps up their current trajectory, as they’re producing outstanding work. I can hardly wait until it’s time for me to get my hands on volume 4, which looks like another hit in the making! It’s definitely a favorite of mine so far!
