Ghosts season 4, episode 3 recap and review: "Halloween 4: The Witch"

As a die-hard fan of the spooktacular sitcom Ghosts, I can’t help but be enchanted by each new episode that unfolds. This time, it’s the fourth Halloween installment, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint!

This evening marks the fourth Halloween special on “Ghosts”. Instead of having a tranquil night as Sam and Jay initially planned, Patience is cooking up something different.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 3.

In a house haunted by a Puritan specter, Sam and Jay opt for a tranquil Halloween evening. Given her suspicions, Patience is already convinced that Sam is a witch, and she plans to conduct a witch-trial to confirm her beliefs. Notably, with their choice of a peaceful Halloween, the other spirits also become involved in the upcoming witch trial.

What is the outcome of the witch trial regarding Sam, and should Patience perhaps be given more consideration going forward?

Patience puts Sam on trial in Ghosts season 4, episode 3

Sam appears less than thrilled about not having a small Halloween celebration at home this year. Since it’s her favorite holiday, she decides to don a costume regardless. As she struts her stuff in Hetty’s dress, the spirits announce that Sam will be standing trial for being a witch.

Sam instructs them to enjoy themselves, as she won’t be participating in this event because she and Jay are hosting a garage sale instead. Poor Flower misunderstands this, thinking the yard itself is being sold, but it’s an opportunity to get rid of some of Hetty’s belongings. Additionally, it seems that Jay’s items will also be included since they tend to wind up outside.

In Sam’s trial, she is pronounced guilty. Patience passes down the sentence of turning Sam into stone. It appears as though this transformation has taken place. Alberta, Hetty, and Trevor step outside to discover a statue that strongly resembles Sam.

As a gamer, I find myself in a tricky situation: I gotta win over Patience, but not before we thwart Jay’s plan. Seems like he’s trying to peddle the Sam Statue, and that’s a big no-no! The dude he sold it to isn’t your average statue collector; he’s a YouTube sensation, always on the hunt for explosive content.

Jay has to get the statue back

As a gamer, Although I can’t chat with the ghosts myself, Trevor is sending updates to me via the iPad. This intel leads Jay (and me, Pete) on an adventure to Kaboom Boy’s house. While we’re there, I stumble upon another spectral presence, and I really hope that Sam returns to engage with this new spirit.

In a similar fashion, Patience reveals that the ghosts could bring Sam back (due to Isaac’s threat to expose Patience dancing in a diabetes commercial), Jay then topples the statue and removes its head. As one might expect, Sam emerges from the scene. It turned out she wasn’t the statue; instead, it was something recently acquired by Hetty and her husband at an auction that they had forgotten about due to their enthusiasm for bidding. Oh, Hetty!

In this episode, there were several noteworthy discussions about powers. There’s a hint that Hetty might gain a power at some point in the future. During the episode, when she believed Sam was in danger, she attempted to summon a power. This suggests how much Hetty has evolved. In the first season, such powers wouldn’t have mattered to her.

Later, there were several instances where Alberta’s ability to hum was brought up. However, let me tell you, it’s quite intriguing, but Patience possesses a blood power that is much more terrifying.

At the close of the episode, it’s incredibly heartwarming. There’s an adorable scene between Jay and Sam when Jay expresses his affection for Sam by pointing out all the things he cherishes about him.

Absolutely, and here comes the game-changer: Patience hinted at her imminent demise below ground, after not passing the test in the open world. But she’s not just returning to any old place; she’s joining the “unseen” ones. I can’t wait to uncover more about these mysterious beings this season!

Ghosts airs Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
