Ghosts' Rebecca Wisocky talks the importance of balancing comedic and dark themes

As a gamer with a heart for both gaming and TV shows, I can’t help but appreciate the exceptional balance that CBS’ Ghosts manages to strike between comedy and deep, thought-provoking themes. The episode “Holes Are Bad” from season 3 was a masterpiece, tackling a sensitive topic like suicide with an impressive blend of levity, sensitivity, and nuance.

At San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and creative minds behind CBS’ popular sitcom, Ghosts, came together for a second time to share their excitement with fans and reveal details about the upcoming season. The panel in Ballroom 20 was brimming with updates and charm, but one conversation left a lasting impression. This discussion revolved around an intriguing episode from season 3 of Ghosts called “Holes are Bad.”

In the story “Suicide by Hanging: A Tragic Tale,” we discover that the character Hetty takes her own life in a desperate attempt to save Flower from the well. During a discussion about the series, moderator Perri Nemiroff commended actress Rebecca Wisocky for her exceptional portrayal of Hetty’s heart-wrenching death scene.

In her remarks, Wisocky acknowledged Sophia Lear and Jude Wang for their work in shaping and presenting the episode’s narrative. She also shared that she had taken part in conversations about this storyline being a part of Hetty’s journey in season 3 of Ghosts. Moreover, she emphasized that she recognized the significance of this tale to be told.

In simpler terms, “Our comedy series delves into some profound, serious topics for a light-hearted show, which has greatly connected with our viewers,” Wisocky explained. “This approach is crucial to us.”

She explained that approaching suicide in a comedic manner felt both daring and crucial, as it required a delicate balance of humor, sensitivity, and depth. The panel members agreed with her sentiments, expressing pride over the episode as they worked on it. They all found it emotionally impactful during the production week.

Richie Moriarty, known for his role as Pete on Ghosts, expressed admiration for Wisocky’s performance. He stated, “Every day, we are astonished by Rebecca’s talent. However, that specific episode was an incredibly emotional week to film, and it only increased our appreciation and respect for Rebecca even further.”

We’re optimistic that the fourth season of the show Ghosts will carry on its tradition of skillfully incorporating profound and delicate narratives into its robust comedic structure. Given its return to the extended episode format it used during its first two years, we expect even more impactful episodes. This series consistently strives for excellence as a prime-time sitcom, serving as an inspiration to other popular streaming comedy shows by demonstrating the beauty of blending genres effectively in humor.

Beginning this coming Thursday, October 17, at 8:30 PM Eastern Time, catch the premiere of “Ghosts” season 4 on CBS. Don’t forget to stream subsequent episodes the following day exclusively on Paramount Plus. For those who haven’t yet, now’s a great time to binge-watch seasons 1 through 3 of “Ghosts”!
