As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the addition of Ghostface to Mortal Kombat 1 is nothing short of brilliant! Being a die-hard fan of both franchises, I’ve always dreamt of a crossover that would do justice to both worlds. And boy, did NetherRealm Studios deliver!
NetherRealm Studios recently unveiled the gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 featuring the new guest character, Ghostface. The character from the widely recognized Scream franchise appears to be launching an impressively grisly debut in the esteemed fighting game series, thanks to the amusing nods the developers have incorporated into the game. Among these references is a particularly meta fatality that horror enthusiasts will likely find both funny and entertaining.
Johnny Cage is the true victim of Ghostface’s meta Mortal Kombat 1 fatality
At the conclusion of the gameplay video (watch it here), Ghostface is seen viciously stabbing his opponent, who happens to be Sub-Zero in this instance. The scene transitions to a living room TV screen, where the deadly move, or ‘fatality’, is being displayed. As the camera gradually withdraws, we see hands and a controller frantically pressing buttons – these belong to Johnny Cage, losing dismally to the killer in Mortal Kombat 1. In an outburst of frustration, he hurls his controller aside, complaining about facing “just some guy with a knife”. Moments later, Ghostface emerges behind him, fatally stabbing him, causing blood to spatter on the television.
The scream is famous and well-liked due to its insightful commentary on the horror movie genre. This death scene certainly matches that description. It also serves as a humorous nod to the opening of Scream 2. Additionally, the voice acting by Roger L. Jackson, who voices the characters in the films, enhances this interpretation’s accuracy.
Ghostface’s gameplay is rich with allusions to the Scream movies, as evident by their iconic hunting knife and the capacity to make a call and bring in another Ghostface to aid in defeating the adversary.
On November 19, 2024, Ghostface joins the Mortal Kombat 1 roster, accessible to players who own the Khaos Reigns expansion pack. For those without the expansion, Ghostface will be open to all on November 26, 2024. The DLC is currently available for purchase across platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
