On September 24, 2024, Ghost of Yōtei was unveiled to deafening cheers during PlayStation’s State of Play event. This character has managed to win over the hearts of fans – and it’s not only through the use of a sword.

Release Date & Plattforms

At The Game Awards 2024, this atmospheric adventure was nominated as the Most Anticipated Game. It’s scheduled to be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025, priced at $69.99. Pre-orders are now available on PlayStation.com and at selected retailers, with excitement levels running high based on the reaction so far.

Setting

In the 1600s, nestled in the far northern reaches of what is now known as Hokkaido (Ezo back then), Ghost of Yōtei unfolds a cinematic portrayal of rural life in Japan. The tranquil beauty of snow-draped shrines, steamy onsen baths hidden within the mist, and the majestic outline of Mount Yōtei form an environment that is both serene and unyielding.

The team from Sucker Punch Productions was inspired by numerous journeys they took to the northern regions of Japan, with the striking solitude of Mount Yōtei playing a significant role in shaping their ideas. Jason Connell, the creative director, highlighted Mount Yōtei’s breathtaking isolation as a major influence. To create an immersive experience, sound designers recorded the natural sounds of Shiretoko National Park – including wind, wildlife, and other ambient noises – to bring the world to life.

Story

In its own right, Ghost of Yōtei presents a self-contained narrative. The game centers around Atsu, a mercenary grappling with her past, who assumes the role of an Onryo – a vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore, famed for dispensing justice even after death.

16 years after bearing witness to her family’s gruesome slaying, crucified on a ginkgo tree (as symbolized by its leaves in the game’s logo) – Atsu has dedicated herself to tracking down those responsible: the feared Yōtei Six, an infamous gang whose ranks encompass the Snake, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, the Dragon, and their enigmatic leader, Lord Saitō.

As anger propels her weapon, the voyage delves further into complex issues such as sorrow, recovery, and absolution. Compared to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei provides a greater degree of narrative control to players.

Gameplay

Ghost of Yōtei is a third-person, open-world action adventure.

Underneath the beautiful cherry blossoms hides a deadly blade. The game offers intense and adaptable combat. Atsu finds herself faced with the tragic legacy of the sword that was once driven into the tree she was tied to as a child. As players advance, they’ll discover an array of weapons such as dual katanas, bows, and even early firearms.

Underneath the lovely cherry blossoms is concealed a sharp blade. The game features immersive and customizable combat. Atsu encounters the sorrowful inheritance she was bound to the tree with as a child – a sword. As players make progress, they’ll uncover an assortment of weapons like dual katanas, bows, and even early firearms.

In this sequel, what makes it stand out is its increased flexibility for players. The creators have placed a strong focus on providing players with greater autonomy than before: decide which character from the Yōtei Six to pursue first, undertake risky bounties, or learn from master weapon trainers to unlock additional abilities.

In the realm of Ezo, it’s wide open and teeming with life. Amidst skirmishes, adventurers have the chance to gaze at the stars, delve into sumi-e painting, or merely bask in the tranquil splendor of the surroundings.

Indeed, you can find riding partners. For an experience that truly feels epic, imagine charging through misty woods on a horse, brimming with determination and carrying a sword that’s as comforting as it is sharp.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t wait to fully leverage the PS5’s impressive capabilities for an unparalleled gaming experience! The game delivers immersion like no other, with the DualSense controller’s tactile feedback bringing every clash of steel to life through its sensitive vibrations. Plus, 3D spatial audio – whether through built-in TV speakers or stereo headphones – will transport me deep into the heart of the forest, letting me hear every leaf rustle and whisper as if I were really there.

Editions & Extras

For those who want more, Sucker Punch has packed the shelves with multiple editions.

The “Deluxe Digital Version” (priced at $79.99) comes with unique armor sets, horse equipment, sword collections, and early privileges for an intricate in-game map.

If you’re on the hunt for an item worthy of your personal shrine, the Collector’s Edition priced at $249.99 offers a wealth of tangible trinkets instead.

In addition to the digital bonuses, it offers a full-size replica of Atsu’s haunting spirit mask, which can elegantly stand alongside Jin Sakai’s from Ghost of Tsushima. Other items include a cloth sash adorned with the names of the Yōtei Six (mark them off as you accomplish each one), a reproduction of Atsu’s katana guard made by her father, in-game currency, an instructional guide for the mini-game Zeni Hajiki, and a foldable ginkgo tree model – complete with a wolf at its base.

Nothing like having matching vengeance décor.
