As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of animated features that promise the moon but often deliver only a fraction. However, Ghost Cat Anzu managed to pique my interest from the get-go, with its vibrant art style and intriguing premise. The world of Iketeru seemed like a place straight out of a dream, filled with quirky characters and a feline hero that could put any cat meme to shame.
In the story of “Ghost Cat Anzu”, Tetsuya and his daughter Karin journey to the perpetual summer town called Iketeru. The reason for their visit is that Tetsuya has a debt to a loan shark which he’s struggling to pay off. He had hoped to obtain funds from his father, whom he hasn’t seen in about twenty years, but his father refuses to help with the money. This situation forces Tetsuya to return to the town he abandoned, leaving Karin behind, as he seeks a way to earn enough money to clear his debt.
Following the departure of Karin’s less-than-ideal father figure, it falls upon Anzu – a longtime ghostly resident of their town and everyone’s favorite friendly spirit – to step in as her guardian. Anzu is a cat who has been around for quite some time, with his charm drawing many seeking friendship. Karin’s grandfather had discovered the playful stray when he was just a kitten during a rainstorm, taking him under his wing and raising him. After living over two decades in excellent health, Anzu earned the title of an eternal ghost cat.
In character, Anzu is cheerful, charming, and witty. This skilled feline craftsman roams the town, offering assistance to the locals wherever he goes. He alleviates an elderly man’s back pain with a soothing massage, and keeps harmful cormorants at bay to protect the town’s fish supply – a versatile cat indeed! However, Anzu isn’t just selfless; he has a biting wit that gives him an edge and enhances his captivating personality, adding humor to the movie as well.
In simpler terms, “Ghost Cat Anzu” tries to delve into significant plot points late in the story, which makes them seem insignificant and lack emotional impact. For instance, Karin’s grief over her mother’s death is introduced late, and when they have a brief reunion, it’s overshadowed by the action. This means that during touching moments, viewers may feel disconnected because there isn’t enough background information to make these scenes resonate emotionally. Essentially, “Ghost Cat Anzu” struggles to balance its fun, light-hearted side with its deeper themes, often rushing through its most emotional scenes.
It’s important to note that Ghost Cat Anzu isn’t without its merits. The animation manages to hold viewers’ attention, and it does an impressive job of creating a captivating world. Although the storyline may only scratch the surface in terms of depth, Anzu is a character you can’t help but cheer for. Ultimately, Ghost Cat Anzu offers 90 minutes of playful, wacky entertainment that you won’t forget easily.
