The classic platformer series by Crystal Dynamics, known as Gex, has been brought back to life on contemporary gaming systems through the efforts of Limited Runs’ Gex Trilogy. This re-release is part of Limited Runs’ mission to introduce modern gamers to a piece of gaming history, while still preserving much of the original games’ endearing qualities. Additionally, it boasts numerous modern updates that enhance the overall experience.
The trilogy collection, being an upgraded version of the initial games, offers numerous fresh additions, making it an exceptional method to immerse yourself in the world of Gex. Highlights consist of playing Gex 2 and 3 in a widescreen format, and crucially, by utilizing complete analog controls. Although this may not seem significant, the opportunity to revisit (or explore for the first time) the games with improved visuals and color, and within a contemporary package, is certainly worth delving into.
The initial version of this game (launched in 1995) leans towards traditional, 2D platform style, for those unaware. However, Limited Run has added numerous enhancements that breathe fresh life into the game. Features such as the option to rewind gameplay, save at any moment, and adjust filters to alter visuals during play are all commendable. Naturally, it wouldn’t be enjoyable without an entertaining game, but it certainly is. Unlike its subsequent installments, the original Gex focuses on gathering remotes in a relatively linear progression, battling foes, and delivering witty humor. It’s delightful to revisit this classic.
In my view, it’s in the sequels where Gex truly outshines. While they undeniably draw inspiration from games like Super Mario 64, their brilliance lies in the 3D environment. The series really comes into its own in these installments, as players traverse diverse worlds through television screens and engage with enemies. The trilogy’s updates have significantly improved this experience, making exploration and combat more enjoyable than ever.
The ability to handle sequels using vintage controls while preserving the game’s authentic atmosphere and appeal has given me confidence that Limited Run is considering a multitude of other 3D platformers from the past for re-release, particularly Gex, whose charm is essentially its defining trait. Fortunately, Limited Run understands this and has included extra features for dedicated Gex enthusiasts in their trilogy package.
Showcasing an interview with Dana Gould (the voice actor for Gex in the games), sneak peeks of an unpublished game starring Gex’s offspring, and a music player for the entire series, gives the impression that Limited Run truly appreciates and values preserving games like Gex.
Gex Trilogy Review: Final Verdict
The Gex Trilogy, while possibly appealing primarily to dedicated fans, can be enjoyed by anyone who gives it a try. Although these games are quite old, they remain as endearing, entertaining, and humorous as ever. With numerous enhancements and fantastic additional content, the Gex Trilogy is an essential addition to your gaming library. However, what we truly wish for is a worthy successor in development.
SCORE: 8/10
