Among the ‘90s platforming characters, it’s unfortunate that Gex didn’t gain more popularity. The series has been inactive for many years, but due to constant requests from fans, it’s finally receiving attention. This summer, we’ll see the release of the Gex Trilogy, which collects the original three Gex games along with the two titles designed for Game Boy Color. I had a chance to try it out at PAX East 2025, and I believe this re-release could revive the franchise.
The Gex Trilogy shifts all five games onto Limited Run’s Carbon Engine, introducing fresh UI elements and enhancements such as gameplay rewinding or save state creation. Given that the original Gex games had a few rough spots, these contemporary features streamline the overall gaming experience. However, dedicated fans have the option to bypass these modern additions and enjoy the games in their traditional format instead.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing the entire demo of my game on the Steam Deck OLED device, which successfully combined the nostalgic charm of classic handheld gaming with contemporary technology. The colors on that screen truly stand out, significantly more vivid than they could have been on the screens available 30 years ago. In fact, the enhanced high-definition visuals are such a compelling improvement that they make a convincing case for the release of this trilogy.
As a nostalgic gamer, let me tell you that what truly stands out about the Gex Trilogy is its potential to introduce a whole new generation to this classic series. I recall spending countless hours on Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko as a kid, playing it on my PlayStation. However, it wasn’t until I demoed the remaster at PAX East that I got my hands on the original 2D platformer experience again, and it felt like stepping back into a piece of my childhood.
Fervent supporters of the old Square Enix mascot are eagerly waiting for a fresh Gex game, and this could be the initial move towards making that dream a reality. This would give publisher Square Enix an opportunity to assess current enthusiasm for the series, and a surge of new fans could potentially spark the development process for the gecko’s overdue comeback.
This preview is based on a demo played on Steam Deck at PAX East 2025.
