George Russell: Why Was He Disqualified From the Belgian GP? Explained

As a dedicated Formula 1 fan, I was absolutely ecstatic watching George Russell‘s impressive performance during the Belgian GP. His one-stop strategy and tenacious defense against Lewis Hamilton right up to the finish line had me on the edge of my seat. But, the joy was short-lived as the heartbreaking news of his disqualification from the race broke out.

On Sunday, during the last laps at the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell engaged in a fierce competition for the leading position. Russell managed to maintain his spot with just one pit stop, while Hamilton attempted to pass him all the way to the finish line. Initially, Russell claimed victory, but later, he was disqualified from the race due to a breach of the FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations. Let’s examine the reasons behind Russell’s disqualification.

What happened to George Russell at Belgian GP?

George Russell was excluded from the results of the Belgian Grand Prix because his car failed to meet the FIA’s post-race weight requirements as outlined in the Formula 1 Technical Regulations.

At the Belgian GP, Russell delivered an outstanding performance to claim the pole position with a one-stop approach. Yet, his triumph was unfortunately taken away after being disqualified due to a violation of FIA regulations regarding post-race car weight. Despite his stellar drive, Russell’s car weighed less than the required minimum without fuel – 798kg – upon measurement following the race.

After draining the last 2.8 liters of fuel from my car, I was left with a weight of only 796.5kg. However, this was 1.5 kg lighter than the minimum weight required by TR Article 4.1. A Technical Delegate’s report mentioned that this issue would be reported to the stewards for review. Later on, following a hearing with the stewards, they issued a statement indicating that I had breached Article 4.1 of the FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations and thus, the standard penalty for such an infringement would be applied.

The FIA performed extra weight inspections with the team looking on as an observer. According to reports, Toto Wolff of Mercedes stated that the team was fine with the results, but it would be challenging for Russell. This penalty resulted in Russell being excluded from the race, allowing Hamilton to secure the win. Piastri and Leclerc finished in second and third places respectively.
