As a long-time fan of General Hospital, I have to say, it’s always bittersweet when our favorite characters take a break or leave the show temporarily. Michael E. Knight, who has been brilliantly portraying Martin Grey since 2019, was no exception.

Michael E Knight’s character, Martin Grey, has been a recurring figure in the ABC soap opera “General Hospital” since 2019. However, fans have been wondering about his absence from the show after he departed Port Charles in a February 2024 episode. Despite his return on the September 18 episode, viewers are still curious to understand why he was missing for such an extended period.

Below, you’ll find the information detailing the reasons behind Michael E. Knight’s character Martin Grey’s absence from General Hospital.

Why Did Michael E. Knight’s Martin Grey Leave General Hospital?

In a recent chat, Michael E. Knight shared that his character, Martin, initially took a 3-month hiatus from General Hospital. A turn of events occurred when Martin found out that Lucy Coe, his girlfriend, had conspired with Scotty Baldwin, her ex, to deceive him. This revelation led Martin to decide to leave the town.

During his break, there were major changes within the writing team of the series, leaving Knight questioning if his character would remain in the show’s future. As August approached, he found himself contemplating, “Well, I guess it’s all good, no hard feelings.” This is what he shared during an interview with Soap Opera Digest.

Actor who portrayed Tad Martin in All My Children and later became a part of General Hospital, expressed gratitude for the time spent there. “Frank [executive producer Frank Valentini] first brought me on board to collaborate with Roger [Howarth], when I was struggling to secure my health insurance,” he recounted. “I will forever be indebted to Frank because a brief stint of four days eventually turned into a four-year journey,” he concluded.

“The actor went on to say, ‘To me, the prize was already mine. Four days feeling like four years? No complaints! I consider myself one lucky monkey, if you catch my drift.’

In due course, Knight returned to the series after Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten took over as the head-writing team. “My allegiance is always with Frank,” he declared. “And when Frank contacted me about his plan to bring me back and shared details regarding Martin’s role in the show, I was overjoyed.
