Gene Hackman & Betsy Arakawa’s Death Ruled ‘Suspicious,’ Gas Leak Doubted

According to a recently published search warrant affidavit, the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa are being viewed as potentially suspicious.

What did police say about the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa?

As reported by Variety, Detective Roy Arndt expressed to a judge that the circumstances leading up to the mysterious deaths of the couple appear “suspiciously unusual,” warranting an extensive search and examination.

Arndt observed that the incident’s location matched where the police found it when they arrived. Arakawa was found lying on the bathroom floor, and a bottle of prescription pills was open on the countertop, with some pills spilled nearby. Hackman was reportedly discovered in the couple’s mud room, near the kitchen, with his sunglasses placed beside him.

As suggested by the detective, it seems like they both tumbled down. Inside the bathroom closet, a lifeless dog was discovered near Arakawa’s body, while two seemingly healthy dogs remained on the property. The front door to the couple’s residence was left ajar, yet there was no indication of forced entry.

At first, it seemed as if a gas leak might have been responsible for the fatalities. However, upon inspection by both the fire department and the gas company, no signs of a gas leak were found on the premises. Arndt stated that there were “no apparent indications” of such a leak.

Arndt pointed out that there was uncertainty surrounding the exact time when both Hackman and Arakawa passed away. As stated by the detective, a space heater had been discovered near Arakawa’s head, which might have fallen in the event of the woman suddenly collapsing to the ground, according to his explanation.

According to the affidavit, the person making it (Arndt) thinks that the circumstances leading up to the deaths of the two people seem suspicious enough for a comprehensive search and examination. The search warrant application was granted by the Santa Fe County Magistrate Court on Wednesday evening, suggesting that further details may emerge as the ongoing investigation proceeds.
