It seems that a potential director for the Gears of War movie has been identified, as per reports from The Hollywood Reporter, indicating that talks are ongoing with a filmmaker regarding directing the video game adaption.
Who is directing the Gears of War movie?
As reported by THR, David Leitch is in negotiations with Netflix for a directorial role in an upcoming project. Known for recent works like The Fall Guy (2024), Bullet Train, Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, and co-directing John Wick (2014) alongside Chad Stahelski, Leitch is also set to produce the film with his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick.
At present, John Spaihts is assigned to pen the screenplay for the upcoming film. Notably, Netflix has joined forces with The Coalition Studio, which oversees the franchise, in this movie production. Previously, Spaihts collaborated on the script for the last two Dune films alongside Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth. Additionally, he was recognized as a writer on Passengers, Doctor Strange, Prometheus, among other projects.
As for now, specifics about the movie’s plot are scarce. The Gears of War series primarily revolves around the struggle between mankind and an underworld reptilian species called the Locust Horde, which emerged onto the surface (referred to as “E-Day” in the game universe). Initially, the first three games in this franchise focused on Marcus Fenix, a soldier from the Coalition of Ordered Governments, who led a team with the aim of annihilating the Locust Horde.
The initial installment of this game franchise premiered in 2006, forming a trilogy that concluded in 2011. The first three games in the series were created by Epic Games under the supervision of designer Cliff Bleszinski. After 2011, the series carried on without Bleszinski, and since then, four additional games set within the Gears of War universe have been released. Currently, a new game titled Gears of War: E-Day is being developed, scheduled to release at some point in the future as a prequel to the series.
