Garry's Mod reportedly hit with DMCA by Skibidi Toilet film studio

As a long-time fan of both Garry’s Mod and user-generated content, this latest development leaves me quite perplexed. On one hand, I appreciate the success that Skibidi Toilet has achieved and the creativity it showcases. On the other hand, it seems unfair for a production studio to potentially stifle the very platform that birthed such a sensation.

About a year ago, the Skibidi Toilet video series burst onto the scene, spreading like wildfire due to its catchy tunes and a mix of assets from Garry’s Mod. However, this popularity might lead to complications for the former, as Michael Bay’s Invisible Narratives studio has issued Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notices against it. It seems that as they prepare for long-form TV and movie content based on the viral sensation, they have also taken action against Garry’s Mod.

Garry Newman, the creator of Garry’s Mod, announced on Discord (in the S&box community) that a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) claim was made against him. This claim was allegedly filed by a representative from Invisible Narratives, a production studio linked to Michael Bay’s work on Skibidi Toilet TV series and movies. The company claims Garry’s Mod uses characters related to Skibidi Toilet, such as “Titan Cameraman, Titan Speakerman, and Titan TV man.” However, Newman denies any connection between the content on Steam, Valve, or Garry’s Mod and Skibidi Toilet.

Instead, Alexey “Dafuqboom” Gerasimov acknowledges Garry’s Mod and its community as significant contributors to the development of Skibidi Toilet, citing the use of modified Half-Life 2 assets. In a Discord chat, he clarified that he was not involved in any DMCA action against Garry’s Mod. However, it appears lawyers representing Invisible Narratives may be taking steps to limit access to Skibidi Toilet, possibly due to copyright infringement concerns. This is supported by the fact that Gerasimov’s own YouTube videos featuring Skibidi Toilet have had their audio removed, a common occurrence when copyrighted content is involved.

As a seasoned journalist with years of experience under my belt, I can say that this situation is indeed peculiar and leaves much to be desired in terms of clarity. Having covered countless stories over the years, I’ve learned that patience is key when dealing with unfolding events such as these. So, let us all keep our eyes peeled and continue to track this story closely, while also keeping a keen eye on our beloved Garry’s Mod topic for any new developments.
