For a considerable period, driver fatigue has been a major concern among truck drivers. However, investigating this matter without compromising safety is challenging. It seems that using the game “Euro Truck Simulator 2” might be a solution.

Michal Martinka, a researcher at Liberec Technical University’s Faculty of Textiles in the Czech Republic, has been employing the simulation game by SCS Software to artificially induce drowsiness in study participants, ensuring their safety without exposing them to any real danger on the road.

ETS2 was the simplest and the most practical solution because it mirrors real driving conditions. The game allowed us to simulate fatigue safely. We needed a reliable platform to simulate long hours of driving, and the game provided exactly that. – Ing. Michal Martinka, Ph.D.

In this study, the test subjects were given a setup that resembled a driver’s cab complete with a steering wheel. However, rather than controlling an actual truck, they found themselves interacting with a computer screen running the game “Euro Truck Simulator 2.” For durations ranging up to seven hours, the participants engaged in what appeared to be driving.

The Result Of The Study: A T-Shirt For Driving Safety

Using this configuration, Matika and his colleagues successfully designed a t-shirt incorporating washable, nearly imperceptible sensors capable of monitoring drivers’ crucial signs, like their breathing rhythms, to identify instances of microsleep onset. It’s been reported that these sensor-embedded shirts function more dependably compared to the in-vehicle sensors currently installed in many cars and trucks.

The experiment has gained recognition globally, and currently, Matika and his colleagues are collaborating with a Japanese university. Their goal is to refine the technology further for enhanced safety on roads worldwide.
