As an enthusiastic GameStop (GME) investor, I was taken aback by their recent announcement about selling off their GameStop Canada and Micromania France physical store businesses. This move came out of the blue without much prior notice, adding to the company’s ongoing confusion as they seem to be consolidating in unconventional and questionable ways. The strange twist here is that CEO Ryan Cohen has chosen to present the rationale behind these sales in a politically charged manner, which leaves me wondering about their strategic intentions.
This week, GameStop publicly stated its plans to seek potential buyers for its retail operations in Canada and France. Until now, these regions have been managed by GameStop Canada and Micromania France under GameStop’s control. The brief statement did not provide a reason for this sale. However, Ryan Cohen, an influential figure, took to social media to offer some additional insights on the transaction.

Your purchase will automatically include high taxes, liberal values, socialist and progressive ideologies, a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and “wokeness” at no extra cost if you decide to buy today!

It’s hard to take seriously their decisions sometimes, but Cohen and GameStop have made questionable moves based on trendy ideas before. Fortunately, there might be hope for their Canadian and French retail operations. However, complaining about diversity and inclusivity issues during a business sale seems typical coming from someone who deleted the entire GameInformer website, magazine, and 33 years of work without even attempting to sell it first.
It appears that GameStop Canada and Micromania France retail operations might be transferred to new ownership, according to recent developments. Keep an eye out for further announcements regarding the GameStop saga.
